Mustard Crop Facing Sprouting Issues: 5 Measures Farmers Should Take to Protect Their Harvest

Key Highlights

  • High temperatures are causing sprouting issues in mustard crops.
  • Reduced sowing area, especially in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Haryana.
  • Mustard crops are facing diseases due to temperature fluctuations.
  • Experts recommend using pentonide sulphur, metalaxyl, and Carbendazim for protection.
  • Farmers should consult local agriculture departments before applying treatments.

As the winter season sets in, farmers are facing a new challenge in mustard cultivation due to rising temperatures in the daytime. While the mornings and evenings are cold, the strong sunlight in the afternoon is causing issues with mustard crops, especially in states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. The high temperatures have affected the germination process, leading to sprouting problems and an increase in plant diseases. Experts predict a 10% reduction in mustard sowing this year compared to last year.

Why Are Mustard Crops Facing Sprouting Issues?

The main reason for the sprouting problem in mustard is the unusually high temperatures during October and November. In Rajasthan, for example, the temperature was 2 to 7 degrees Celsius above the normal levels, which affected the mustard crops. Many crops that were sown early could not germinate properly, leaving farmers with fewer options. The high temperature has also caused diseases in the plants, adding to the stress on the crop.

How High Temperature Affects Mustard Crops

The high daytime temperatures are directly affecting the mustard crop. Many plants are failing to germinate, and those that do are withering quickly. This problem is worsening in areas where the temperature remains high for an extended period, affecting both the quality and quantity of the mustard harvest.

5 Measures to Protect Mustard Crops from High Temperatures

If you have sown mustard late this year, there are some important steps you can take to protect your crop from further damage. Here are five key measures suggested by agriculture experts:

  1. Prevent Wilting with Pentonide Sulphur: Due to temperature fluctuations, mustard crops are suffering from wilting. To protect your crop, sprinkle 1.5 to 2 kilograms of pentonide sulphur per bigha of land.
  2. Control Root Rot with Metalaxyl: If your plants are showing signs of root rot, spray a solution of 0.5 grams of metalaxyl per liter of water to prevent further damage.
  3. Fight Early Diseases with Carbendazim: If the mustard plants show early signs of disease, prepare a 0.2% solution of Carbendazim medicine and spray it on your crop.
  4. Treat Bacterial Infections: If there is a bacterial infection along with other diseases, mix 3 grams of streptomycin and 30 grams of carbendazim in 15 liters of water and spray the solution on the plants.
  5. Address Stem Rot and Weed Problems: For stem rot, burn and bury the diseased crop residues to stop the disease from spreading. Also, keep the field free from weeds and avoid excessive irrigation. Additionally, spray a solution of 1 gram of Carbendazim (Bavistin) in 1 liter of water to control the disease.

Important Reminder

Before using any pesticides or medicine on your mustard crop, it is important to consult the local agriculture department. They can provide guidance on the correct usage and ensure the safety of your crops.

By following these simple steps, farmers can protect their mustard crops from the damaging effects of high temperatures and diseases, ensuring a healthy harvest.
