Farmers in flood-affected areas are set to receive compensation for their crop loss before the Diwali festival. According to the Special Secretary of the Agriculture Department, Virendra Prasad Yadav, the crop damage occurred in two phases of floods this year:
Farmers in Bihar whose crops were damaged due to heavy rains or floods are eligible for compensation. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has directed officials to ensure that no farmer is left out from receiving crop loss compensation. The Agriculture Department is working swiftly to provide relief, and the compensation process is being expedited to reach farmers before Diwali.
Media reports indicate that the floods affected 92 blocks in 19 districts, damaging crops across 2,24,597 hectares of land. The floods caused over 33% damage to crops in 91,817 hectares. Banana crops in areas like Karnapura, Saraipur, and the Diara region were particularly affected, with 534 acres of banana plantations severely damaged.
The Bihar government has also transferred financial aid directly to the accounts of flood-affected families. In the second phase, ₹225.25 crore has been released through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) to around 3.21 lakh families. In total, ₹532.22 crore has been transferred to more than 7 lakh families across the state.
In addition to Bihar, the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has also provided compensation to over 3 lakh farmers affected by floods. A total amount of ₹163.151 crore has been distributed to 3,12,866 farmers across 34 districts. Lakhimpur Kheri witnessed the highest crop damage, with ₹70.88 crore paid to 1.10 lakh farmers. Similarly, compensation has been distributed to farmers in Lalitpur and Siddharthnagar districts.
