As the Kharif season nears completion, farmers across India are preparing to sow their Rabi crops. In an effort to boost farmer’s incomes, scientists are developing high-yielding wheat varieties. One such variety, Karan Aditya DBW 332has been introduced by the Indian Wheat and Barley Research Institute, KarnalThis new variety stands out for its exceptional yield potential, offering up to 78 quintals per hectare.

Key Features of Karan Aditya DBW 332

The Karan Aditya DBW 332 wheat variety has been found to deliver a yield that surpasses many popular varieties. Here are some of its notable characteristics:

  • Yield: It has an average yield of 78.3 quintals per hectare, which is 31.3% higher than the HD 2967 variety and 12% more than HD 3086. The maximum recorded yield is 83 quintals per hectare.
  • Plant Height: The plants reach an average height of 97 cm.
  • Grain Weight: The weight of 1,000 grains is about 46 grams.
  • Growth Period: This variety starts to emerge in about 101 days, and it matures in around 156 days.
  • Disease Resistance: Karan Aditya DBW 332 is resistant to major diseases such as yellow and brown rust and strongly resistant to Karnal bunt.
  • Nutritional Value: This variety contains 12.2% protein and 39.2 PPM iron, making it ideal for various wheat-based products.

Suitable Cultivation Regions

This variety is well-suited for the northwestern plains of India under irrigated conditions. States like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan (except for Kota and Udaipur divisions), and parts of Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand have been identified as ideal for Karan Aditya DBW 332 cultivation.

How to Cultivate Karan Aditya DBW 332

To achieve the best yield from this variety, farmers should follow these cultivation guidelines:

  • Sowing Time: Planting should be done between October 20th and November 5th.
  • Seed Rate: 100 kg of seed per hectare is ideal for sowing.
  • Row Spacing: Maintain a distance of around 20 cm between rows.
  • Irrigation: Karan Aditya DBW 332 requires 5-6 irrigations. The first should be done 20-25 days after sowing, with subsequent irrigations spaced 20-25 days apart.
  • Disease Protection: Treat seeds with Vitavax at a rate of 2-3 grams per kg of seed to prevent Kanduwa disease.

Fertilizer Use for Better Yield

For optimal results, fertilizers should be applied based on soil testing. For land with good fertility, it’s recommended to use:

  • Nitrogen: 150 kg per hectare
  • Phosphorus: 60 kg per hectare
  • Potash: 40 kg per hectare

Half the nitrogen and all phosphorus and potash should be applied during sowing. The remaining nitrogen can be used in two parts—after the first and second irrigations.
