What is Gypsum and Why is it Important for Crops?

Gypsum, scientifically known as calcium sulfate (CaSO₄·2H₂O), is a natural mineral that contains about 16-19% calcium and 13-16% sulfur. It plays a vital role in agriculture by improving alkaline soil, which can be less productive. By applying gypsum, farmers can make their alkaline land more fertile, leading to better crop quality and increased yields, particularly for oilseeds, pulses, and wheat.

Government Subsidy for Farmers

In the financial year 2024-25, the Rajasthan government plans to distribute gypsum to 20,000 farmers under the National Food Security Mission. This initiative specifically targets improving pulses and wheat crops in alkaline soils.

Subsidy Details:

  • 100% Subsidy: Farmers will receive a 100% subsidy on gypsum for up to 0.5 hectares of land.
  • Maximum Quantity: Each farmer can get up to 1.5 metric tonnes of gypsum based on their needs.
  • Additional Support: Under the Soil Health Fertility Component of the National Agricultural Development program, farmers can apply for a maximum of 5 metric tonnes of gypsum per hectare at a 50% subsidy for a maximum of two hectares.
  • Pulses Subsidy: For pulses, farmers can receive 250 kg of gypsum per hectare at a 50% subsidy, capped at Rs 750 per hectare for up to two hectares.

How to Apply for the Gypsum Subsidy

Farmers interested in applying for the gypsum subsidy must use the Raj Kisan Sathi - Suvidha app.

Here’s how:

  1. Login: Farmers should log in using their Janaadhaar number.
  2. Submit Demand: They can send their gypsum demand through the app.
  3. Upload Documentation: A demand report from the Soil Testing Laboratory, no older than six months, must be uploaded along with the application.
  4. Contact for Help: For more details on the subsidy, farmers can reach out to their local agriculture department.

By taking advantage of this subsidy, farmers can improve their soil health and enhance their crop production, ensuring better yields and quality. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to supporting agriculture and helping farmers thrive.
