Mahindra’s AI-enabled system is now operational on over 100,000 acres of sugarcane fields across Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Haryana. This innovative technology helps determine the precise time for harvesting sugarcane, maximizing both yield and sugar recovery.
Mr. Hemant Sikka, President of Farm Equipment Sectors at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., emphasized the benefits of AI applications in agriculture. He stated, “Artificial Intelligence applications can be extremely beneficial for agriculture, offering several advantages. Our sugarcane analytics tool provides valuable insights across vast tracts of land, enabling precise assessment of the optimal harvest time. Through technology, we aim to transform farming practices and are excited to partner with SSK.”
Vivek Kolhe, Chairman of Kolhe Sugar Factory, highlighted the significant impact of the technology. “Our mill is the first in India to implement an AI-based harvesting solution. A pilot project on 3,000 acres, conducted three years ago, showed substantial improvements in sugar recovery. Based on these results, we have decided to expand the technology to our entire operational area. This revolutionary technology has the potential to benefit India’s sugar mills and farmers in the long term.”
Mahindra’s AI system employs advanced precision farming methods, including spectrometry and satellite imaging. The technology analyzes photosynthetic components of crop leaves to determine the maturity stages of sugarcane. By assessing these factors, the AI algorithms calculate the optimal harvesting time to ensure maximum sugar yield and enhance farmer revenues.
Sugarcane is a critical cash crop in India, contributing significantly to the country’s agricultural GDP. It supports millions of farmers and plays a vital role in producing food, fiber, fodder, fuel, and chemicals. As the largest producer of sugar globally, India’s sugarcane industry is crucial for national economic stability and growth.
The integration of AI in agriculture is transforming farming practices by improving efficiency and productivity. AI-driven tools utilize data from sensors, drones, and satellites to optimize crop management, soil health, and irrigation. They also predict weather patterns, monitor pest activity, and suggest the best planting and harvesting times.
These advancements help reduce resource waste, increase yields and enhance overall farm management. AI’s ability to automate tasks and provide actionable insights supports sustainable farming practices and addresses challenges like climate change and food security.
