Farming can lead to riches, and there's a crop that's gaining attention among agricultural scientists for its potential to make farmers wealthy. In recent years, sesame farming has been providing profits for farmers. The demand for high-quality sesame seeds has driven prices to rise, with the best quality fetching over Rs 15,000 per quintal. This crop can be cultivated in all three seasons of the year, but the majority of cultivation happens during the Kharif season.
Sesame, a cash crop with 50% oil content, finds its roots in states like Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and others. The timing of cultivation varies across regions, with sowing typically occurring from June to mid-July in most states like Rajasthan, while Bihar sees cultivation in the Zaid season between February and March. In Uttar Pradesh, sesame cultivation spans across both Rabi and Kharif seasons, with sowing from August to September for Rabi crops.
Madhya Pradesh farmers have been successfully cultivating sesame in Kharif, Rabi, and even during summer seasons. Seeds of varieties like AVTS 1 to AVTS 16 are sown from the second week of January to the second week of February for summer cultivation. Inspired by this, research is now underway in Uttar Pradesh to explore summer sesame cultivation, potentially opening new doors for farmers.
Chandrashekhar Azad Agriculture and Technology University in Kanpur is at the forefront of this research. Seeds from Madhya Pradesh have been procured and planted in various parts of the university's laboratory. The progress is closely monitored, with results expected within the next two months. If successful, this research could pave the way for farmers in Uttar Pradesh to diversify their crops and enhance their income streams.
Success in this research could revolutionize farming in Uttar Pradesh, providing farmers with an additional avenue for income. Professor Ram Batuk Singh emphasizes the potential benefits, stating that if successful, this experiment could lead to substantial profits for farmers, boosting their income in both the summer and winter seasons.

With ongoing research and advancements, the future looks bright for farmers looking to capitalize on the opportunities presented by sesame cultivation.
