This is a clear improvement from the 411.80 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year, as per the latest report from the Department of Agriculture & Farmer’s Welfare. Key crops like wheat, pulses, and some coarse cereals have shown encouraging growth, although challenges remain in certain areas.

Wheat Takes the Lead

Wheat, India’s most important rabi crop, has been sown on 200.35 lakh hectares, significantly up from 187.97 lakh hectares last year. While this is still lower than the normal area of 312.35 lakh hectares, the sowing season continues, leaving room for more progress. Good weather and adequate soil moisture from the recent monsoon have contributed to this positive trend.

Strong Growth in Pulses

Pulses have performed well, with a total sowing area of 108.95 lakh hectares, compared to 105.14 lakh hectares last year. Pulses, including gram (chickpea), lentils, and peas, are essential for meeting India's protein needs.

  • Gram (chickpea) continues to dominate, with sowing reaching 78.52 lakh hectares, up from 74.39 lakh hectares last year.
  • Lentils, widely grown in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, have also increased to 13.45 lakh hectares from 12.77 lakh hectares.
  • However, crops like moong and urad beans have seen a decline in some regions, posing challenges.

Oilseeds: Mixed Progress

Oilseed crops have seen mixed results, with total sowing reaching 80.55 lakh hectares, slightly down from 84.85 lakh hectares last year.

  • Rapeseed and mustard, the main oilseed crop, covered 75.86 lakh hectares, a slight dip from 80.06 lakh hectares in 2023-24.
  • Smaller oilseeds like sunflower and sesamum have reported lower sowing areas due to regional challenges.

Coarse Cereals: Progress with Scope for More

Coarse cereals, including millets (Shri Anna), have been sown on 29.24 lakh hectares, up from 24.67 lakh hectares last year. However, this is still below the normal area of 53.82 lakh hectares, highlighting the need for increased focus.

  • Jowar, a major millet crop, has achieved 17.43 lakh hectares, up from 14.06 lakh hectares last year, driven by rising demand for climate-resilient crops.
  • Other coarse cereals like barley and maize have shown slight improvement, but smaller millets and ragi remain areas of concern.
