PMAY-G offers subsidies for affordable rural housing, with relaxed eligibility rules now benefiting more families across India.

Key Highlights

  • Subsidy of ₹1.20 lakh for rural housing.
  • The income limit raised to ₹15,000 per month.
  • Families with bikes or fridges are now eligible.
  • Landline phone ownership no longer disqualifies applicants.
  • Additional benefits include free gas, electricity, and water connections.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) is a significant initiative by the Central Government aimed at providing affordable housing to people across the country. This scheme is implemented under two categories: Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban for urban areas and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin for rural regions. Under this scheme, beneficiaries receive subsidies to help them build or purchase homes.

In urban areas, a subsidy of up to ₹2.67 lakh is offered. In rural areas, the subsidy amounts to ₹1.20 lakh in plains and ₹1.30 lakh for homes built in hilly or inaccessible regions. These subsidies help make housing more affordable for citizens. Recently, changes have been made to the eligibility criteria of PMAY-G, expanding the number of beneficiaries eligible for the scheme.

What are the Changes in PMAY-G?

The rules of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin have been relaxed, allowing more rural residents to benefit from the scheme. With the changes in eligibility, individuals who previously didn't qualify may now be eligible.

Here are the key updates:

  • Income Limit Raised: Applicants with a monthly income of ₹15,000 can now apply for the scheme. Earlier, those with an income of ₹10,000 or more were considered ineligible.
  • Bike and Fridge Ownership: Previously, families owning a bike or fridge were excluded from the scheme. However, this rule has been changed, allowing such families to receive subsidies.
  • Landline Phones: Previously, families with landline phones were ineligible, but now, even these households can benefit from the scheme.

Subsidy Installments under PMAY-G

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin, the financial assistance provided to build a house is disbursed in three installments:

  1. First Installment: ₹70,000
  2. Second Installment: ₹40,000
  3. Third Installment: ₹10,000

This amounts to a total of ₹1.20 lakh, which is provided to the beneficiary for constructing a home.

Benefits and Facilities Under PMAY-G

PMAY-G offers various additional facilities to beneficiaries apart from financial assistance. These include:

  • Employment under MNREGA: Beneficiaries who construct their houses themselves are eligible for 90 to 100 days of wages under the MNREGA scheme. A labour card is required to avail of this benefit.
  • Assistance for Toilet Construction: An additional ₹12,000 is provided for the construction of toilets.
  • Free Gas Connection: Beneficiaries receive a free gas connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
  • Free Electricity: A free electricity connection is provided under the Saubhagya Yojana.
  • Free Water Connection: Beneficiaries also get a free tap water connection under the Har Ghar Nal Yojana.

Impact of PMAY-G: A Look at the Numbers

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin was launched in 2015 to help people living in inadequate housing or those without a proper roof over their heads. The government provides financial assistance in installments, allowing beneficiaries to construct durable homes.

In districts like Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, over 80,000 people have benefited from the scheme. Across the country, millions of people in rural areas have been supported by PMAY-G, improving their quality of life by providing secure and affordable housing.

How to Apply for PMAY-G

To apply for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin, follow these steps:

  1. Check Eligibility: Before applying, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria based on income, asset ownership, and housing conditions.
  2. Submit Application: Visit the official website or your nearest Common Service Center (CSC) to fill out the application form. Provide accurate details to avoid rejection.
  3. Document Verification: After submission, your application will be reviewed, and documents will be verified. Make sure to provide all necessary documents like income proof, identification, and land ownership details.
  4. Await Approval: Once approved, you will be notified, and the subsidy amount will be disbursed in installments as per the scheme’s rules.

By making these changes to PMAY-G, the government aims to extend housing benefits to a broader segment of the rural population, helping more people achieve their dream of owning a home.
