Key Highlights

  • Farmers with irrigated land up to 2.5 acres are eligible.
  • Motorcycle ownership no longer affects eligibility.
  • Income above ₹10,000 can now apply.
  • The survey begins on October 8 for Kutcha house residents.
  • ₹1.20-1.30 lakh grants for permanent houses in rural areas.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G), a key initiative by the Indian government, is aimed at providing homes for the homeless and those in need, especially in rural areas. This scheme helps people build or buy homes by offering financial assistance in the form of subsidies. While the urban version of the scheme is called PM Awas Yojana Urban, the rural version is known as PM Awas Yojana Gramin. Recently, there have been important updates to the scheme that now extend benefits to more people, especially farmers.

Key Changes for Farmers in PM Awas Yojana Gramin

The rules have been expanded to include farmers with irrigated land of up to 2.5 acres and unirrigated land of up to 5 acres. Earlier, these farmers were not eligible for the benefits. With this new relaxation, a larger number of farmers in rural areas can now fulfill their dream of owning a home under this scheme.

Other Changes in PM Awas Yojana Gramin Rules

There have also been changes in the existing conditions for the scheme. Some key updates include:

  • Motorcycle Ownership: Previously, if a household owned a motorcycle, they were ineligible for the scheme. Now, this condition has been removed. Households can own a motorcycle and still receive benefits.
  • Income Limit: Earlier, only people with incomes below ₹10,000 were eligible. Now, people with incomes above ₹10,000 can also apply.
  • Phone Ownership: There are no longer any restrictions related to owning a phone or mobile. People with phones can now apply for the scheme without any issues.

Survey Starts on October 8

A new survey under the PM Awas Yojana Gramin is set to begin on October 8. This survey will focus on identifying villagers who are living in kutcha (temporary) houses. These people will be eligible for grants to build pucca (permanent) houses.

Here’s a breakdown of the financial assistance:

  • Plains Areas: Eligible individuals will receive ₹1.20 lakh in financial assistance.
  • Hilly or Remote Areas: People living in these regions will get ₹1.30 lakh to build their homes.

Past Surveys and Updated Rules

According to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the last survey was conducted in 2018, but many deserving people were left out. Starting October 8, a new survey will be conducted to include those living in kutcha houses. The rules of the survey have also changed, allowing those with motorcycles or scooters to be eligible. Additionally, households with a monthly income of up to ₹15,000 can now also benefit from the scheme.

PM Awas Yojana Progress in Madhya Pradesh

In Madhya Pradesh, the government has a target to build over 38 lakh houses under the PM Awas Yojana Gramin. So far, 37 lakh houses have been constructed, and 3 lakh houses have been allotted. The central government is also working on providing housing for the poor in urban areas under the PM Awas Yojana Urban.

The Aim of PM Awas Yojana

Launched in 2016, the PM Awas Yojana aims to provide pucca houses with basic amenities to needy families, especially in rural areas, by 2024. The next phase, PM Awas Yojana 2.0, is set to continue until 2028-29. A new survey will also be conducted, aiming to build a total of 3 crore houses in the next 5 years—1 crore in urban areas and 2 crore in rural areas.
