The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) aims to provide permanent homes to homeless individuals across India. With two versions, PMAY Urban and PMAY Gramin (rural), this scheme offers subsidies and financial assistance for housing construction. However, new updates reveal that certain beneficiaries who have not followed through with house construction after receiving funds could soon be removed from the program’s list. Here’s what you need to know.

PM Awas Yojana Gramin provides financial help of ₹1.20 lakh to build permanent houses for the needy. While many beneficiaries have successfully started their homes, there are reports, particularly from Banka City in Bihar, of some individuals who received funds but have not yet completed construction. The local administration has decided to take action, giving a final 10-day notice to around 50 beneficiaries to complete their houses. Failure to do so may lead to removal from the scheme.
In Banka, beneficiaries who have received the first, second, or third installment of the PM Awas Yojana funds but have not built their homes will face action if the construction isn’t completed within the 10-day deadline. These names will be removed from the beneficiary list.
This isn’t the first time the government has cracked down on defaulters. Notices were previously issued to those who had taken funds but not completed their homes. The administration has been actively reviewing the progress and taking action in some cases.
For the financial year 2024-25, a target of building 4,844 houses has been set for the Banka district. So far, the first installment has been disbursed to 3,390 beneficiaries, allowing them to start construction. A total of 4,299 homeless families have been selected across 11 blocks, with approval granted for their house construction. The remaining families will also receive the first installment soon.
To ensure fairness, the administration has intensified its efforts to prevent irregularities in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Officials are visiting homes to verify construction progress and take action against the incomplete work. Beneficiaries who have not completed their houses are under strict survey.

In Saharsa District, Bihar, a controversy arose when eligible beneficiaries' names were removed from the list and replaced with other individuals. Media reports identified the names of Kiran Devi, Nandini Devi, and Phoolo Devi as being removed from the PMAY list. Authorities are investigating the issue and promise corrective action after the inquiry.
Eligible beneficiaries under the PM Awas Yojana Gramin receive a total of ₹1.20 lakh, distributed in three installments:
For those in hilly or difficult-to-access areas, an additional ₹10,000 is provided, bringing the total to ₹1.30 lakh.
If you’re a PM Awas Yojana beneficiary and haven’t yet completed your house, it’s essential to act quickly. Ensure your house construction is finished to avoid being removed from the list and losing your benefits.
