Key Highlights

  • PM Awas Yojana provides up to ₹1.20 lakh for house construction.
  • Non-compliant beneficiaries may be removed from the scheme's list.
  • 10-day notice given to 50 beneficiaries in Bihar.
  • Over 4,000 houses are targeted for construction in 2024-25.
  • Strict actions are being taken to prevent irregularities.

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) aims to provide permanent homes to homeless individuals across India. With two versions, PMAY Urban and PMAY Gramin (rural), this scheme offers subsidies and financial assistance for housing construction. However, new updates reveal that certain beneficiaries who have not followed through with house construction after receiving funds could soon be removed from the program’s list. Here’s what you need to know.

Who Might Lose Their Benefits?

PM Awas Yojana Gramin provides financial help of ₹1.20 lakh to build permanent houses for the needy. While many beneficiaries have successfully started their homes, there are reports, particularly from Banka City in Bihar, of some individuals who received funds but have not yet completed construction. The local administration has decided to take action, giving a final 10-day notice to around 50 beneficiaries to complete their houses. Failure to do so may lead to removal from the scheme.

What Happens After the Period of 10 Days?

In Banka, beneficiaries who have received the first, second, or third installment of the PM Awas Yojana funds but have not built their homes will face action if the construction isn’t completed within the 10-day deadline. These names will be removed from the beneficiary list.

Previous Actions Against Defaulters

This isn’t the first time the government has cracked down on defaulters. Notices were previously issued to those who had taken funds but not completed their homes. The administration has been actively reviewing the progress and taking action in some cases.

Targets and Progress Under PM Awas Yojana Gramin

For the financial year 2024-25, a target of building 4,844 houses has been set for the Banka district. So far, the first installment has been disbursed to 3,390 beneficiaries, allowing them to start construction. A total of 4,299 homeless families have been selected across 11 blocks, with approval granted for their house construction. The remaining families will also receive the first installment soon.

Preventing Irregularities in the Scheme

To ensure fairness, the administration has intensified its efforts to prevent irregularities in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Officials are visiting homes to verify construction progress and take action against the incomplete work. Beneficiaries who have not completed their houses are under strict survey.

Whose Names Will Be Removed from the PMAY List?

  • Completed Houses: Beneficiaries who have already built their homes will be removed from the list, as they have already utilized the scheme’s benefits.
  • Other Scheme Beneficiaries: Those who have received benefits from other housing schemes, such as the Mukhya Mantri Awas Yojana, will also be removed from the list.

Reports of Irregularities

In Saharsa District, Bihar, a controversy arose when eligible beneficiaries' names were removed from the list and replaced with other individuals. Media reports identified the names of Kiran Devi, Nandini Devi, and Phoolo Devi as being removed from the PMAY list. Authorities are investigating the issue and promise corrective action after the inquiry.

Financial Assistance Breakdown in PM Awas Yojana Gramin

Eligible beneficiaries under the PM Awas Yojana Gramin receive a total of ₹1.20 lakh, distributed in three installments:

  1. First Installment: ₹40,000 to begin construction, given along with approval.
  2. Second Installment: ₹60,000 when the house's roof is completed.
  3. Third Installment: ₹20,000 once the construction is finished.

For those in hilly or difficult-to-access areas, an additional ₹10,000 is provided, bringing the total to ₹1.30 lakh.

What Should You Do if You’re on the List?

If you’re a PM Awas Yojana beneficiary and haven’t yet completed your house, it’s essential to act quickly. Ensure your house construction is finished to avoid being removed from the list and losing your benefits.
