Agricultural scientists are working alongside the government to help boost farmer’s incomes and crop production across India. One recent development is the introduction of a new mustard variety called "Pusa Mustard 32". Developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi, this mustard variety is specially designed for irrigated conditions and timely sowing. Released by the Central Variety Release Committee in 2021, this improved variety is expected to be a game-changer for mustard farmers.

Features of Pusa Mustard 32

Pusa Mustard 32 is specifically designed for farmers in Zone-2, which includes areas like Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Western Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh's plains. This variety is perfect for the Rabi season and offers a range of benefits for farmers:

  • Suitable for irrigated conditions and timely sowing.
  • The main stem of the plant can grow up to 73 cm tall.
  • It has a high pod density, meaning more pods per plant.
  • Pusa Mustard 32 is ready for harvest in just 132-145 days.
  • The average yield is 27.1 quintals per hectare, but it can produce up to 33.5 quintals under optimal conditions.
  • The mustard seeds contain up to 38% oil.
  • This variety is tolerant to low water stress, making it ideal for areas with limited water supply.

New High-Yielding Maize Variety HQPM-28 Developed for Fodder

In addition to mustard, scientists at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University's Regional Research Center in Karnal have developed a new hybrid maize variety called HQPM-28This variety is specifically created for high-quality green fodder and is ideal for states like Uttar Pradesh (Bundelkhand region), Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

Features of HQPM-28 Hybrid Maize

HQPM-28 offers several features that make it a valuable crop for farmers looking to maximize yield and quality:

  • High-yielding variety with excellent response to fertilizers.
  • Resistant to major diseases like Maydis leaf blight and fall armyworm pests.
  • It can produce an average of 141 quintals per acre with a maximum yield of 220 quintals.
  • Ready for harvesting within 60-70 days of sowing.
  • Nutrient-rich, containing 8.7% protein, 42.4% acid-detergent fiber, and 65% neutral detergent fiber.
  • Provides double the amount of essential amino acids like lysine and tryptophan compared to regular maize.

This hybrid maize variety is not only high-yielding but also rich in essential nutrients, making it an excellent choice for farmers growing fodder. Its fast maturity and disease resistance make it a reliable crop, while its high protein content ensures better nutrition for livestock.
