In a bid to support farmers and enhance their income, both Central and State Governments have introduced various schemes. One such popular scheme is the Free Electricity Scheme, which has gathered significant attention among farmers across different states. However, recent developments indicate a change in the rules governing this scheme, potentially affecting its beneficiaries.
A new guideline has been introduced under the Free Electricity Scheme, altering the eligibility criteria for beneficiaries. According to the new guideline, only farmers who have cleared their previous electricity bills will qualify for the scheme's benefits. Those with outstanding bills stand to lose out on the advantages offered by the scheme. To avail themselves of this benefit, farmers must settle their outstanding bills before March 31, 2023, ensuring eligibility from April 1, 2023, onwards.

The Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has initiated the Krishak Free Electricity Scheme for farmers in the state. This scheme promises free electricity for private tube wells, benefiting approximately 14.32 lakh farmers. However, certain conditions may also apply, including the limits on the consumption of electricity based on geographical regions.
Farmers seeking to benefit from the Free Electricity Scheme must adhere to the new guidelines set forth by the government. This includes settling outstanding bills and registering themselves for the scheme before the specified deadline. Failure to do so may result in the loss of the scheme's benefits.

Recognizing the challenges faced by farmers with outstanding bills, the UP government has provided adjustments to ease their burden. An interest waiver scheme has also been introduced, allowing the farmers to register and settle the outstanding bills with reduced interest rates.
To participate in the scheme, the farmers must possess a meter or electricity connection specifically for tube wells. Additionally, they need to undergo the eKYC, providing necessary information about their electricity connections.
Farmers interested in availing themselves of the scheme must register online through the designated portal. Information regarding electricity bills and exemptions can be accessed through the portal or by visiting relevant departmental offices.
