India actively participated in the G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting on September 12-13, 2024, in Cuiabá, Brazil. Led by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Ram Nath Thakur, the Indian delegation engaged in vital discussions with countries like the USA, Brazil, Japan, Germany, the UK, Spain, and the UAE. These talks aimed at strengthening agricultural trade, advancing technology, and promoting sustainable farming.
India held several strategic meetings with global partners, focusing on agricultural cooperation, technology sharing, and sustainability.
On September 12, Thakur met with Japan's Agriculture Minister Sakamoto to discuss using advanced technology in Indian agriculture. The discussions also covered food processing, cold storage, and sustainability. Thakur urged Japan to expedite the approval for importing Indian pomegranates and grapes, while Japan requested to export Japanese cedar logs to India.
On September 13, Thakur held talks with Brazil’s Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro. The focus was on advancing cooperation in agricultural science, particularly ethanol production. Both sides aimed to finalize an agreement between India’s ICAR and Brazil’s Embrapa before the G20 leaders’ summit in November.
In a meeting with Xochitl Torres Small, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, India and the U.S. reaffirmed their commitment to joint initiatives, particularly in climate-smart agriculture. Both nations discussed agricultural innovation, risk protection, and market access for fruits, vegetables, and alfalfa hay fodder.
Thakur met with Germany's Parliamentary Secretary Ophelia Nick, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) in farming, agroecology, and supporting small farmers. Germany invited India to participate in the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture in Berlin.
During talks with UK Minister for Food Security Daniel Zeichner, India and the UK explored ways to transform agriculture into a sustainable food system, including precision breeding and gene editing. The UK expressed interest in India's agricultural extension models like KVKs and ATMA.
Thakur’s meeting with Spain’s Agriculture Minister Luis Planas focused on technology transfer, improving water-use efficiency, and climate-resilient farming. Spain thanked India for approving a veterinary certificate for dairy products and sought further cooperation in meat product protocols.
In discussions with UAE’s Minister of Environment and Climate, Dr. Amna Al Dahak, both nations explored agricultural trade and collaboration in research. The UAE showed interest in vertical farming and high-yield technologies.
At the G20 Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting, Thakur reiterated India’s commitment to ensuring global food security and promoting sustainable agricultural systems. He emphasized India’s efforts to balance economic, social, and environmental sustainability, which aims to boost farmer prosperity. He highlighted India’s success in implementing large food safety net programs to improve food security and nutrition.
The G20 meeting focused on four main areas:
Thakur congratulated Brazil for its G20 presidency and wished South Africa well as it prepares for its upcoming term. The meeting showcased India's strong efforts in global agricultural collaboration, emphasizing the importance of sustainability, trade, and innovation in shaping the future of agriculture.
