What is the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana?

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a government initiative designed to offer affordable housing to the poor and needy. It operates under two branches:

  • PMAY Urban (PMAY-U) for cities
  • PMAY Gramin (PMAY-G) for rural areas

Both schemes provide subsidies and loans to help people build or buy homes. PMAY aims to ensure that every person in the country has a home at an affordable cost.

Recent Developments in PMAY-G

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently released Rs 32 crore in the first installment to PMAY-G beneficiaries from Ranchi, Jharkhand. This event also saw the approval of 1,13,400 new houses to be built across Jharkhand for the poor and needy. The Prime Minister was originally scheduled to visit Jamshedpur for the event, but due to bad weather, the program was held in Ranchi.

Central Government’s Ambitious Target: 2 Crore New Homes

The central government has set a goal to build 2 crore additional homes under PMAY over the next five years. This project will require more than Rs 3.06 lakh crore. Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has stated that by the financial year 2024-25, approval letters will be distributed to all targeted beneficiaries. So far, out of the target of 2.95 crore houses, 2.65 crore have already been built.

Subsidy Details Under PMAY-G

Under PMAY-G, the government provides financial assistance to help poor families build homes. The subsidy amount is:

  • Rs 1.20 lakh for homes in plain areas
  • Rs 1.30 lakh for homes in hilly or difficult-to-reach areas

Beneficiaries can also access bank loans to support house construction.

How to Apply for PMAY-G Financial Assistance

To qualify for financial aid under PMAY-G, applicants must own at least 25 square meters of land. After a land survey, the government grants approval for house construction. Once approved, beneficiaries receive financial assistance in three stages:

  1. First installment: Rs 40,000
  2. Second installment: Rs 70,000
  3. Final installment: Rs 20,000

This brings the total subsidy amount to Rs 1.30 lakh.

Benefits of PMAY-G

Beneficiaries under PMAY-G receive several additional benefits:

  • Electricity connection with the new home
  • LPG gas connection under the PM Ujjwala Yojana
  • Clean drinking water provided by the government
  • Rs 12,000 for toilet construction under the Swachh Bharat Mission
  • Wages for 90-100 days under the MGNREGA scheme if the beneficiary works on building their own home

CMV360 Says

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is a vital program aimed at providing affordable housing for the country’s poorest citizens. With new approvals and financial aid, the government is working toward its goal of offering homes to all, making significant progress in both rural and urban areas. The approval of 1,13,400 new homes and the handover of 46,000 house keys is a step forward in achieving this vision.
