In a significant move by the Telangana government, loans up to Rs 2 lakh for over 40 lakh farmers will be waived off within the next two months. This decision, aimed at easing the financial burden on farmers, comes as a relief after the recent cabinet announcement.
Previously, farmer’s loans were waived off in multiple phases, but now, under the new scheme, loans will be waived in one go. Administrative preparations are already underway to finalize the list of eligible farmers and streamline the documentation process.
Farmers who took short-term agriculture loans between December 12, 2018, and December 9, 2023, and are unable to repay are eligible for this waiver. The scheme covers loans up to Rs 2 lakh; loans exceeding this amount will not qualify for the waiver.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has allocated Rs 31,000 crore for this initiative, ensuring that farmers do not have to repay both the principal and interest on their loans. The waiver is expected to be implemented before August 15, 2024.
This move has been praised as a step towards fulfilling the promises of Kisan Nyay by the Congress government in Telangana. Rahul Gandhi, in response, hailed it as a historic step towards making over 40 lakh farmer families debt-free.

Over the past decade, Telangana has seen political changes and prior loan waivers totaling Rs 28,000 crore during the tenure of previous Chief Ministers. The current government aims to expedite this process with a streamlined approach. This initiative marks a significant stride towards supporting the agricultural community in Telangana, ensuring financial relief, and promoting sustainable farming practices.
