The Indian government has been making continuous efforts to support the poor and homeless families in the country. One such initiative is the PM Awas Yojana, which aims to provide homes for the underprivileged. In line with this, various state governments are running their schemes to offer support to needy families. In Rajasthan, the Free Plot Scheme is being implemented to help homeless and nomadic families. On October 2, marking Gandhi Jayanti, the state government will begin distributing land leases under this scheme.

The Free Plot Scheme is a state-level initiative aimed at providing 300 square meters of land to poor families, particularly those from freed, nomadic, and semi-nomadic communities. The government is offering this land at extremely low rates to ensure these families can build permanent homes and lead more secure lives.
The scheme offers plots at a nominal cost depending on the population of the village, based on the 1991 census:
The Free Plot Scheme is designed for the freed, nomadic, and semi-nomadic families living in rural areas of Rajasthan. These communities often lack permanent residence and live in temporary camps, constantly moving from one place to another. With the scheme, they will finally have an opportunity to own land and build permanent homes.

To be eligible for the scheme, the family unit is defined based on the age and marital status of its members:
To apply for the Free Plot Scheme, eligible families will need to provide the following documents:
On Gandhi Jayanti, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma will distribute land leases to eligible families, officially launching the campaign. The government plans to provide leases to 34,000 families, offering them a new chance to establish permanent homes.
The identification of the eligible families is still ongoing. Currently, around 6 to 8 percent of Rajasthan’s population belongs to freed, nomadic, and semi-nomadic communities. These families often do not have proper identification documents, which limits their access to government benefits. To address this, the government has developed a process to issue caste identity certificates instead of traditional caste certificates, helping these communities access various welfare schemes.

The Free Plot Scheme is a significant step toward improving the living conditions of nomadic and homeless families in Rajasthan. By offering 300 square meters of land at minimal costs, the state government is ensuring that these communities can build permanent homes and achieve greater stability. The lease distribution on October 2 will mark the beginning of a new chapter for many families, as they take a step toward secure and stable housing.
