Mushroom farming is becoming an attractive way for farmers to earn a high income with minimal space. Government's Support for Mushroom Farming

The Bihar government, through the State Agriculture Department, has launched a program to encourage mushroom farming. Under the scheme, farmers can receive a 50% subsidy on the total cost, capped at Rs 10 lakh. With the average cost of setting up a mushroom production unit at Rs 20 lakh, farmers only need to invest Rs 10 lakh of their own money under this scheme.

Benefits of Mushroom Cultivation

Mushrooms are high in nutrients and classified as a “superfood.” They are increasingly popular in urban and rural areas due to their health benefits, making them a profitable cultivated crop. The state government also aims to train farmers on growing mushrooms in small spaces, enabling even those without large land areas to participate in the program.

Eligibility and Application Process for Subsidy

Only farmers residing in Bihar are eligible for this subsidy scheme. The subsidy is granted on a "first come, first serve" basis, so early registration is encouraged. To apply, farmers must have documents such as an Aadhar card, bank passbook, farmer registration number, and a certificate of training in mushroom cultivation.

How to Apply Online:

  1. Visit the official Bihar Agriculture Department website: horticulture.bihar.gov.in.
  2. On the homepage, select “Mushroom Related Scheme (2024-25).”
  3. Register for the subsidy with the required details, including your DBT number.
  4. Upload all necessary documents and submit the form.

Farmers can also visit the local Agriculture or Horticulture Department office for assistance in applying.

Steps for Mushroom Cultivation

  1. Compost Preparation: Use waste from wheat, rice, or corn crops mixed with specific chemicals to create compost.
  2. Planting: Spread a 6-8 inch layer of compost and place mushroom spawn on top.
  3. Covering: Add a layer of coco peat or compost manure to protect the mushrooms.
  4. Environment Control: Choose a shaded area that doesn’t get direct sunlight. Mushroom production does not occur outdoors; an enclosed area with a controlled environment is ideal.

Mushroom farming offers a great opportunity for farmers to earn high profits with a small investment and space. Interested farmers are encouraged to explore this scheme and begin their journey into mushroom cultivation.
