Maize is the third most important crop in Uttar Pradesh after wheat and paddy. The state government is encouraging maize production through the ‘Accelerated Maize Development Program.’ Under this program, farmers will receive a subsidy of Rs 15,000 per quintal on maize seeds.
This scheme includes different varieties of maize such as hybrid maize, desi maize, popcorn, baby corn, and sweet corn. This means that farmers growing any type of maize can avail of this benefit. With this support, maize farming can become a profitable venture, improving farmers income.
Apart from being a food grain, maize is also a vital raw material for ethanol production. Starch from maize is used to produce ethanol, while its residue serves as animal feed. This makes maize farming even more beneficial as it supports both food and energy industries.
The Agriculture Minister has urged ethanol-producing companies to support maize farmers. Increasing maize production will not only help farmers but also contribute to the ethanol industry, boosting the overall energy sector.
Uttar Pradesh produces 665 lakh metric tonnes of food grains, making it self-sufficient. The state not only meets its own needs but also exports fruits and vegetables, providing additional income to farmers and strengthening the economy.

The Agriculture Minister highlighted that Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh have similar climates. However, maize productivity in Bihar is higher because farmers there use advanced techniques. Farmers in Uttar Pradesh are encouraged to learn from Bihar’s successful farming methods to improve maize yields and increase profits.
Currently, wheat is grown on 1 crore hectares and paddy on 60 lakh hectares in Uttar Pradesh. However, experts stress the need for crop diversification to prevent future food shortages. Principal Secretary (Agriculture) Ravindra Kumar has advised farmers to consider maize as an alternative to wheat and paddy. Increasing maize cultivation will boost food grain production and enhance farmer’s earnings.
The Uttar Pradesh government is actively promoting maize cultivation, creating new opportunities for farmers. With government support, farmers can increase their income and contribute to the state’s economy.
If you are planning to cultivate maize, this is the right time. Take advantage of government assistance and make maize farming a profitable venture. Switch to maize cultivation today and secure a better future in farming!
