The first flower appears about 32 days after sowing, and each plant has 7 to 8 pods, each measuring 8 to 9 cm long. Each pod contains 8 to 9 seeds. Kashi Nandini peas are ready for harvesting 60 to 65 days after sowing.

  • Suitable regions: Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.

2. Orchard Pea Variety

The Orchard variety is a European pea known for its sweet grains. The pods of this variety are sword-shaped, each about 8 to 10 cm long with 5 to 6 grains. Orchard peas mature within 60-65 days.

For green beans, harvesting can begin 50 to 60 days after planting. The variety is highly resistant to powdery mildew and pod borer diseases.

  • Yield: Up to 15 tonnes of green beans per hectare.
  • Benefit: High resistance to common pea diseases, making it easier to maintain a healthy crop.

4. Pusa Three Pea Variety

Developed in 2013, the Pusa Three Peas variety is an early-maturing pea variety suitable for North India. This variety is ready for harvest 50 to 55 days after sowing, with each pod containing 6 to 7 grains.

  • Yield: About 20 to 21 quintals per acre of green beans can be obtained.
  • Special feature: Early harvest, making it ideal for farmers looking for a quick return.

Tips for Sowing Peas

To get the best yield from these pea varieties, it’s important to follow proper sowing techniques. Here are some guidelines to ensure successful cultivation:

  • Seed Quantity: For tall varieties, use 70-80 kg of seeds per hectare, while for dwarf varieties, use 100 kg per hectare.
  • Row Spacing: For tall varieties, maintain a distance of 30x10 cm between rows and plants. For dwarf varieties, keep a spacing of 22.5x10 cm.
  • Seed Depth: Sow seeds at a depth of 4 to 5 cm.
  • Sowing Equipment: Use a Nari plough, seed drill, or Seedkam fertilizer for sowing in rows.

Seed Treatment for Disease Prevention

  • Fungicide Treatment: Before sowing, treat seeds with a fungicide mix of thiram and carbendazim (2+1) at a rate of 3 grams per kilogram of seed.
  • Insect Protection: To protect seeds from sap-sucking insects, treat seeds with Thomithoxam at a rate of 3 grams per kilogram of seed.
  • Bio-Fertilizers: Treat seeds with Rhizobium leguminosorum for nitrogen fixation and PSV culture for converting soil phosphorus into a soluble state. For this, use 5 to 10 grams per kilogram of seed.

Fertilizer Application

  • For Tall Varieties: Apply 20 kg of nitrogen, 40 kg of phosphorus, 40 kg of potash, and 20 kg of sulfur per hectare.
  • For Dwarf Varieties: Use 20 kg of nitrogen, 50 kg of phosphorus, 50 kg of potash, and 20 kg of sulfur per hectare.

Note: Farmers should consult their local agriculture department for specific advice on fertilizer use and sowing techniques.
