Understanding the Challenges

According to agricultural officers, many farmers diligently tend to their sugarcane plants but overlook proper management of the crop itself. This negligence often results in lower yields per hectare. There is a common misconception among farmers that sugarcane cultivation requires minimal investment. However, this mindset leads to poor care, affecting the yield potential of the crop. Inadequate management can lead to a decrease in yield by as much as 25 to 30 percent.

To address these challenges and maximize yields, farmers can implement the following tips:

  1. Harvesting Technique: Harvest sugarcane precisely at the soil surface to encourage more bud emergence.
  2. Disease Management: Avoid planting sugarcane in fields affected by diseases like red rot, uktha, or kanduva. If necessary, trim the sugarcane stumps using appropriate machinery.
  3. Crop Maintenance: Enhance germination and growth by applying Ethophone solution to the sugarcane stump stubble.
  4. Moisture Retention: Maintain soil moisture by irrigating the field after spreading dry leaves between rows.
  5. Insect Control: Protect the crop from pests like black spots, termites, soldier insects, and mealybugs by applying the recommended insecticide.
  6. Fertilization: Provide adequate nutrients by using a mixture of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash, along with organic and bio-fertilizers.
  7. Disease Prevention: Prevent fungal diseases by incorporating Trichoderma into cow dung manure.
  8. Gap Filling: Fill gaps in the sugarcane field with seedlings obtained from women's groups, which farmers can get through their sugarcane supervisor.
  9. Resource Optimization: Apply NPK water-soluble fertilizer when sugarcane has 4 to 5 leaves to boost growth and protect against insects.
  10. Weeding and Irrigation: Ensure timely weeding and optimal irrigation to support healthy crop development.
