Key Highlights

  • Rs 675 crore relief package approved for Gujarat, Manipur, and Tripura.
  • Gujarat receives Rs 600 crore, Manipur Rs 50 crore, and Tripura Rs 25 crore.
  • Central assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
  • Heavy rains and floods caused widespread damage in these states.
  • The government committed to providing further aid to flood-affected regions.

The Central Government has announced a significant relief package to support states affected by floods and other disasters caused by heavy rains. An advance relief amount of Rs 675 crore has been released from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) for Gujarat, Manipur, and Tripura. This move comes after many parts of the country experienced more than usual rainfall, resulting in severe damage to crops and properties.

States Receiving Relief Funds

Out of the total package of Rs 675 crore, the distribution is as follows:

  • Gujarat: Rs 600 crore
  • Manipur: Rs 50 crore
  • Tripura: Rs 25 crore

These states were severely affected by heavy rains, floods, and landslides during the monsoon season. The assistance is aimed at providing relief to farmers and residents in these states who faced crop losses and property damage.

Gujarat’s Efforts to Support Farmers

Before the Central Government's relief package, the Gujarat government had already taken steps to support its farmers. In July, a state relief package of Rs 350 crore was announced to help farmers whose crops were damaged by heavy rains in nine districts, including Porbandar, Junagadh, Rajkot, and others. These areas experienced a significant loss of agriculture, and the state conducted surveys to assess the damage before releasing funds.

Damage Assessment in Bihar and West Bengal

Flood conditions have persisted in states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, worsened by the release of water from Nepal. Crops and homes have been heavily impacted in these regions. The central government has assured that it will provide further assistance once damage reports are received from the inter-ministerial central teams (IMCT). Teams will soon be sent to Bihar and West Bengal to assess the flood damage.

Heavy Losses Across Several States

This year, several states, including Gujarat, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram, Assam, and Telangana, have suffered severe losses due to extreme weather conditions like heavy rains, floods, and landslides.

Government Relief Fund Allocations

So far in 2024, the central government has released over Rs 9,000 crore to 21 states from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). Additionally, more than Rs 4,500 crore has been distributed to 15 states from the NDRF. Further, a relief package of Rs 1,385 crore has been provided to 11 states from the State Disaster Reduction Fund to aid in recovery efforts.

CMV360 Says

The government’s prompt response with the Rs 675 crore relief package for Gujarat, Manipur, and Tripura is a welcome relief for the farmers and residents who have suffered due to extreme weather. With further assessments underway in Bihar and West Bengal, more aid is expected to reach affected regions in the coming weeks.
