Government Encouragement for Protected Cultivation

The state government is promoting protected cultivation to help farmers save their crops from weather damage. Through the Horticulture Development Scheme, farmers are encouraged to use polyhouses and shade nets. By adopting this technology, farmers can achieve better yields and increase their income.

Subsidy Details for Polyhouses and Shade Nets

Farmers can receive a 50% subsidy for constructing polyhouses or shade nets. The cost per square meter for setting up a polyhouse is Rs 935, with a subsidy of Rs 467 per square meter. For shade nets, the cost per square meter is Rs 710, and the subsidy is Rs 355 per square meter.

Cost Breakdown for Building a Polyhouse

If a farmer builds a polyhouse over 100 square meters, the total cost is Rs 93,500. With a 50% subsidy, the farmer will receive Rs 46,700 from the government and only need to pay Rs 46,700 from their own pocket. This makes it much more affordable to implement protected farming.

Benefits of Polyhouse and Shade Net Farming

Using polyhouses or shade nets offers numerous benefits as mentioned below:

  • Reduced pest incidences that lead to better yields.
  • The temperature inside is 3 to 5 degrees lower than outside, protecting crops from extreme heat.
  • Drip irrigation in polyhouses saves about 90% of water.
  • Polyhouses can withstand winds up to 70-80 km/h, preventing plant damage.
  • Year-round safe cultivation of fruits and vegetables.
  • Potential to double farmer’s income.
