Mahindra Tractors, a leading name in the global tractor industry, has taken a significant step towards sustainable agriculture by introducing its first CNG mono-fuel tractor on its renowned Yuvo tractor platform. The unveiling occurred at the prestigious Agrovision Summit in Nagpur, Central India’s largest agricultural event.
The unveiling was held on the first day of the four-day summit, in the presence of Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road, Transport, and Highways. Mahindra prioritises maximum pollution control, performance, and operational cost-effectiveness by leveraging its significant knowledge in building dedicated CNG-powered tractors.
The new Mahindra CNG tractor developed and tested at Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai offers power and performance comparable to diesel-powered tractors, setting new standards in alternative engine technology for agriculture. Honourable Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and Gujarat Governor Shri Acharya Devvrat jointly inaugurated the groundbreaking tractor.
Here are the key highlights of Mono-Fuel CNG Tractor
Mono-Fuel CNG Tractor: Mahindra’s new tractor runs exclusively on compressed natural gas (CNG). This innovative approach ensures that farmers can operate their tractors efficiently while significantly reducing emissions.
Versatility: The CNG tractor is designed for both haulage and agriculture. It combines power and performance, making it a reliable companion for farmers across various applications. The tractor can handle a variety of agricultural and haulage tasks, matching the capabilities of conventional diesel tractors.
Cost-Effective and Environmentally Friendly: With rising concerns about air pollution and fluctuating fuel prices, this move by Mahindra addresses critical challenges faced by farmers. By opting for the CNG mono-fuel tractor, farmers can save on operational costs and contribute to cleaner air.
The CNG tractor is particularly environmentally friendly, with emissions reduced by roughly 70% when compared to diesel tractors. Lower engine vibrations contribute to lower noise levels, which are 3.5 decibels lower than diesel tractors.
According to the company, this improvement not only allows for longer working hours and engine life but also assures improved operator comfort, catering to both farm and non-farm applications.
Promoting Green Agriculture: Mahindra’s commitment to sustainable practices is evident through this launch. The CNG tractor aligns with the company’s vision of promoting green and eco-friendly farming.
Specification: Mahindra's CNG tractor has four tanks, each with a water capacity of 45 litres and a gas capacity of 24kg when full to 200-bar pressure. Savings of Rs 100 per hour over diesel tractors are expected, adding to its economic appeal.
This isn’t the first time CNG tractors have made headlines in India. In 2021, Shri Nitin Gadkari himself championed the cause by converting his own diesel tractor into a CNG-powered one. The results were impressive:
Mahindra intends to launch CNG tractors after a thorough study of market readiness and response to this ground-breaking technology.
