The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted varied weather conditions across India, ranging from isolated rainfall and snowfall in northern regions to heavy showers in southern statesThunderstorms, dense fog, and cold wave conditions are also expected in several areas. Here's a detailed look at what to expect across different parts of the country in the coming days.

Key Weather Systems at Play

  1. Western Disturbance and Cyclonic Circulations:
    • A cyclonic circulation over North Pakistan and adjoining areas, combined with another circulation over Southwest Rajasthan, is driving rain, snowfall, and thunderstorms in northern and central regions.
    • These systems will significantly affect states such as Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
  2. Fresh Western Disturbance (January 18-21, 2025):
    • This system is expected to bring another spell of scattered rain and snow to the Western Himalayan region starting January 18.

Detailed Region-Wise Weather Forecast

Northern and Central India

  • Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand: Isolated to scattered rainfall and snowfall, which will likely occur on January 16, with chilly conditions persisting.
  • Himachal Pradesh:- Rain and snow are forecasted between January 16-17, particularly in higher-altitude areas. Cold wave conditions are also expected during this period.
  • Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh: - Scattered rainfall and thunderstorms are predicted for January 16. Dense fog will linger in the early mornings and at night, potentially disrupting transportation.
  • Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha: - Rainfall and thunderstorms will occur on January 16, with localized intense activity in some areas.

Southern India

  • Tamil Nadu, Kerala: - Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is likely between January 18-19. Travelers are advised to exercise caution during this time.
  • Nicobar Islands: -  Heavy rainfall is expected on January 16, which may result in temporary waterlogging and localized flooding in vulnerable areas.

Fog and Cold Wave Alerts

Dense Fog Conditions

Dense fog is expected to continue across several northern and eastern states during early morning and late-night hours. Visibility will be significantly reduced, creating potential hazards for travelers.

  • Uttar Pradesh: Dense to very dense fog on January 16.
  • Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh: Dense fog will persist between January 16-17.
  • Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan: Foggy conditions are forecasted from January 16-18, with cold day conditions adding to the chill.
  • Gangetic West Bengal: Dense fog likely until January 16.

Ground Frost

  • Parts of Northeast India, including Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, are expected to experience ground frost conditions between January 16 and 17. This may affect crops and vegetation in the region.

Temperature Trends

  • Northwest & Central India: - A gradual rise in minimum temperatures of 2-4°C is expected over the next five days.
  • East & West India: - No significant temperature changes are anticipated during this period.
  • Himachal Pradesh: - Cold day conditions are likely in isolated pockets on January 16, with temperatures remaining below normal.
