In August, The Gujarat state government announced a significant relief package of ₹1,419.62 crore for farmers affected by heavy rains. More than seven lakh farmers will benefit from this support due to damage to Kharif crops.

Details of the Relief Package

In a recent cabinet meeting led by the Chief Minister, the government decided to allocate ₹1,097.31 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and ₹322.33 crore from the state budget for this relief. This aid aims to help farmers recover from the impact of the heavy rains, which affected crops across many districts.

Compensation Criteria

Farmers will receive compensation based on the type of land and the extent of crop loss.

Here’s a breakdown:

  1. Non-Irrigated Crops:
    • For losses of 33% or more, farmers will get ₹8,500 per hectare under SDRF and an additional ₹2,500 from the state budget.
    • Total compensation for non-irrigated crops will be ₹11,000 per hectare, capped at two hectares.
  2. Irrigated Crops:
    • Farmers facing 33% or more loss in irrigated areas will receive ₹17,000 under SDRF and ₹5,000 from the state budget.
    • This totals ₹22,000 per hectare, also limited to two hectares.
  3. Perennial Horticultural Crops:
    • For these crops, a compensation of ₹22,000 per hectare will be provided for damages of 33% or more, again for a maximum of two hectares.

Additionally, if the calculated compensation is less than ₹3,500 based on land holding, farmers will receive a minimum of ₹3,500.

Affected Districts

The relief will apply to farmers in various districts across Gujarat, including Panch Mahal, Navsari, Surendranagar, and Kutch, among others. A survey conducted by 1,218 teams found that over seven lakh farmers had their crops damaged in 6,812 villages across 136 tehsils.

How to Apply for Compensation

Farmers who have suffered crop loss must apply for assistance through the Digital Gujarat portal. The list of affected villages will be announced by the district administration. Farmers will need to provide evidence of their loss at E-Gram Centers in their villages.
