Mustard, Carrot, Radish, and Spinach: Farmers Can Do This for Better Yields

Key Highlights

  • Focus on sowing mustard, carrot, radish, and spinach this month.
  • Protect the crops from pests and diseases by using proper methods.
  • Ensure good drainage to prevent flooding and rot issues.
  • Farmers in Bihar can sow white mustard and vegetables after rain.
  • Follow agricultural advice for better crop production and yields.

Farmers grow many types of crops during the Kharif season, and vegetable farming is a key part of this. Vegetables are special because they grow quickly, allowing the farmers to earn money throughout the year. While long-term crops like rice and maize take more time to mature, vegetables can provide quicker returns. Farmers are encouraged to follow advice from the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to improve their vegetable production. This guidance applies to farmers in states like Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.

Protecting Crops from Pests and Diseases

The Union Ministry of Agriculture has alerted farmers to take steps to protect their crops, including maize, moong, pigeon pea, and various vegetables like radish, carrot, spinach, cauliflower, and turnip. Farmers should be cautious about pests and diseases during this period. They are advised to prepare for potential flooding and visit their nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Here, they can learn how to use medicines and pesticides effectively to protect their crops from rot disease, and other pests.

What Farmers in Delhi NCR and Punjab Can Do

In Punjab's central areas, now is the right time to sow winter vegetables such as carrots, radish, spinach, and turnips. Farmers can also plant cauliflower, which will yield well if sown at this time. In the areas around Delhi, farmers should prepare fields for sowing early varieties of mustard and peas. Specifically, mustard can be sown in nearby districts like Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar for the Rabi season.

What Farmers in Uttar Pradesh Can Do

Farmers in western Uttar Pradesh can sow other vegetables, including fenugreek and coriander, at this time. This is the ideal period for sowing these crops since the rainy season has ended. Farmers should also plant radishes and ensure proper drainage for vegetables and legume crops to prevent pest infestations and diseases.

What Farmers in Bihar Can Do

In Bihar, farmers should focus on sowing early-maturing improved varieties of white mustard in the northeastern alluvial areas after the rains cease. It is crucial to set up a drainage system in flood-affected areas to protect crops from rot diseases. Additionally, farmers can plant brinjal, tomatoes, and chillies in the northwestern alluvial plain area.

What Farmers in Jharkhand Can Do

Farmers in Jharkhand should protect their pulse and coarse grain crops from excess water, as these crops require less irrigation. In the western plateau areas, it is essential to create drainage systems to remove excess rainwater from moong, urad, arhar, maize, and paddy fields. If excess water is not managed, the plants may suffer from rot. Farmers should also consider spraying suitable insecticides to guard against pests and diseases.
