Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda virtually inaugurated a series of new facilities at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Assam, underscoring the government's commitment to the development of the Northeastern region.

Munda highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's special emphasis on the Northeast's development and the central government's efforts to bridge agricultural development gaps in the region. The inauguration included administrative and educational buildings, hostels, and guesthouses for students.

Expressing the government's vision for India's development by 2047, Munda emphasized the pivotal role of agriculture. He announced a mission with an investment of Rs 11,000 crore to reduce edible oil imports, aiming for self-sufficiency in sesame production. Minister of State Kailash Choudhary encouraged scientists to leverage the natural diversity of the Northeast region. He stressed the development of nature-centric technologies and advocated for organic and natural farming. Choudhary urged for a focus on research related to pulses and oilseeds to reduce the country's reliance on imports, emphasizing the importance of linking agricultural research with entrepreneurship.

Dr. Himansu Pathak, Secretary DARE, and DG ICAR, addressed the gathering virtually, highlighting the vast potential for research and development in North-East India.
