In a move to support the income of farmers, the Madhya Pradesh state government has announced a significant wage hike of 25 percent. This decision aims to ensure that these hardworking individuals receive fair compensation for their labor. The revised rate of wages is set to come into effect from April 1, 2024, marking a substantial increase from the previous rates.
Effective from April 1, 2024, all industrial and unorganized workers will enjoy a 25 percent raise in their wages. This adjustment applies to both trained and untrained workers across various sectors. As a result, the minimum wage for agricultural workers will surge to Rs 7660 per month. Notably, this marks the first revision in labor wages in the state since 2014.
The new minimum wage rates have been calculated by increasing the existing rates by 25 percent and incorporating the variable value allowance. This allowance is based on the All India Consumer Price Index, with calculations extending from January to June 2019. The revised rates have been structured to ensure fair compensation for workers across different categories.
The revised wage structure, effective from April 1, 2024, is as follows:
These rates have been determined based on the average data from January 2019 to June 2019 of the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers.
For agricultural workers, the increase in minimum wage rates will ensure a monthly income of Rs 7660, providing them with a more sustainable livelihood. Similarly, minimum wage rates for beedi workers and agarbatti workers have also seen a 25 percent hike. It's crucial to note that these revised rates will not unfavorably affect any worker; if current wages exceed the new rates, they will remain unchanged until the minimum wage rates catch up.
Agricultural workers primarily include individuals who rely on farming activities for their income. They engage in tasks such as plowing fields, sowing seeds, and harvesting crops, either as hired laborers or sharecroppers. On the other hand, workers in the unorganized sector surround a diverse range of self-employed individuals, contract workers, casual laborers, and more, who operate outside the purview of formal employment contracts.
Workers in the organized sector typically operate under fixed conditions and are often covered by employment laws and welfare schemes. This category includes individuals employed in factories, government jobs, and other formal work settings. The Madhya Pradesh government's decision to increase wages for agricultural workers reflects a collective effort to uplift the economic well-being of these essential contributors to the agricultural sector.

With a minimum wage of Rs 7660 per month, this move ensures fair compensation and economic stability for agricultural laborers.
