The government has introduced a new scheme to support garlic farming, offering a 40% subsidy on cultivation costs along with seeds at a reduced price. This initiative aims to stabilize garlic prices and encourage more farmers to grow garlic in Uttar Pradesh, addressing the high market rates that currently range from Rs 324 to Rs 440 per kilogram. With increasing demand and high costs impacting the public, this support program by the Uttar Pradesh government aims to make garlic more accessible.

Under this new scheme, funded through the Integrated Horticulture Development Mission, garlic farmers will receive financial assistance and discounted seeds. This mission, a joint effort between the central and state governments, covers 45 districts across Uttar Pradesh and targets an expansion of garlic cultivation over an additional 10,000 hectares statewide.
Districts Included in the Scheme:
The scheme is active in various districts, including Saharanpur, Meerut, Bareilly, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur. A full list of participating districts is available from the Department of Horticulture, so farmers can check if their area is covered.
The Horticulture Department has set the allowable unit cost for garlic farming at Rs 30,000 per hectare. Farmers will receive a 40% subsidy, amounting to up to Rs 12,000 per hectare. This support is available for garlic cultivation from a minimum of 0.2 hectares to a maximum of 4.0 hectares per farmer.
Dinesh Pratap Singh, the Minister of State for Horticulture, shared that this year, the government has already approved the scheme for the 2024-25 financial period. Garlic seeds will also be available at a subsidized rate, thanks to efforts by the National Horticultural Research and Development Institute, with prices set between Rs 370 to Rs 390 per kilogram.

The scheme operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Farmers interested in participating should visit the District Horticulture Officer’s office in their area for assistance. Alternatively, farmers can register online by visiting the official website of the Horticulture and Food Processing Department at dbt.uphorticulture.in. Those who need assistance with the online registration can get help from their local Customer Service Center.
The primary goal of this garlic farming support program is to stabilize garlic prices by increasing local production to meet the demand. By supporting farmers and boosting garlic cultivation, the government hopes to bring garlic prices down, making this essential ingredient more affordable for everyone.
The Uttar Pradesh government’s garlic subsidy scheme provides financial assistance and affordable seeds to farmers, aiming to increase garlic production across the state. This initiative not only helps farmers but also benefits consumers by working to lower garlic prices. Farmers in eligible districts are encouraged to apply soon to take advantage of this support.
