In 2013, women made up only 1.5% of Swaraj’s workforce. By 2024, this number has risen to over 10%, marking a significant transformation. Women employees at Swaraj have shown higher retention rates and lower absenteeism, leading to improved productivity and operational efficiency. This reinforces the positive impact of gender inclusivity in manufacturing.
Swaraj’s journey toward gender diversity was not without challenges. Some of the key hurdles included:
Low enrollment of women in technical education
Cultural resistance to women working in factories
Safety concerns in industrial workplaces
Despite these obstacles, Swaraj implemented strategic measures to foster inclusivity and bring more women into manufacturing roles.
Several crucial initiatives have enabled Swaraj to achieve its gender diversity goals:
Swaraj introduced ergonomic workplace enhancements such as robotics, raised platforms, and gravity-assisted mechanisms. These changes reduced physical strain, making manufacturing roles more accessible to women.
To build a strong talent pipeline, Swaraj collaborated with 15 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), five polytechnics, and Advanced Technical Institutes. These partnerships have played a vital role in preparing women for technical roles.
The company launched specialized training modules, including dexterity training and on-the-job learning programs. These initiatives equipped women with the necessary technical skills to excel in manufacturing.
Swaraj ensured a secure and supportive workplace for women through multiple safety measures, including:
GPS-enabled transport services
Buddy systems for workplace support
Deployment of women security personnel

Beyond workplace improvements, Swaraj actively engaged with communities to address cultural barriers. The company conducted parental counseling sessions and factory visits to build awareness and acceptance of women in manufacturing roles.
Pooja Goyal, Founding CEO of The Udaiti Foundation, praised Swaraj’s efforts, stating:
“Swaraj’s commitment to gender diversity proves that investing in skills, infrastructure, and community support can create lasting change. Their success model can be replicated across the manufacturing sector to empower more women and boost India’s economy.”
While Swaraj has made remarkable progress, some challenges persist:
Limited Female Enrollment in Technical Trades: In Punjab’s ITIs, only 400 out of 17,000 students are women pursuing technical courses like diesel mechanics and machining.
Contractual Employment: A significant portion of women in manufacturing hold contractual positions, limiting long-term career growth. Addressing this requires systemic policy changes and organizational efforts.
Swaraj Tractor’s achievements highlight the benefits of a diverse workforce in driving innovation and efficiency. Their success serves as an inspiration for other industries to build more inclusive workplaces. Supporting women in manufacturing not only strengthens businesses but also contributes to India’s economic growth.
