Developed by the Indian Sugarcane Research Institute, Lucknow, Sugarcane Variety 14201 has been gaining traction among farmers since its inception in 2000. Regarded as the second most favorable variety after 0238, this cultivar boasts qualities that make it ideal for jaggery production, further bolstering its appeal among farmers.
This spring sugarcane variety stands out for its upright posture and robust stature. Compared to late-maturing counterparts, Sugarcane Variety 14201 exhibits straight, thick, and solid stalks with moderate hardness. With a commendable sugar content of 18.6 percent, this cultivar offers flexibility against diseases like red rot, ensuring a bountiful harvest. Moreover, its attractive color enhances the quality of jaggery produced, adding to its market desirability. Dr. Alok Shiv, a scientist at the Indian Sugarcane Research Institute, emphasizes the importance of diversification in sugarcane cultivation. Recommending a balanced approach, he suggests allocating 50 percent of the field to early sugarcane and the remaining 50 percent to normal-race sugarcane. By avoiding dependence on a single variety, farmers can mitigate risks and optimize profits.
In addition to Sugarcane Variety 14201, Variety 0238 has also emerged as a staple among sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh. Praised for its high yields and resilience to red rot disease, this early variety has propelled the state to the forefront of sugarcane and sugar production.
While certain sugarcane varieties, such as 11015 and PV 95, have been discontinued due to vulnerability to red rot disease, farmers are advised to choose cultivars recommended by research institutes based on local conditions and climate. Seeking guidance from agricultural scientists and department officials can aid farmers in making informed decisions regarding sugarcane cultivation, ensuring optimal yields and profitability.
