Maharashtra and Gujarat governments are providing financial relief to farmers through insurance claims and compensation packages for crop losses.

Key Highlights

Soybean farmers in Maharashtra have good news on the way as their long-pending crop insurance claims are set to be cleared soon. The central government has directed the concerned insurance company to pay Rs 225 crore worth of claims to around two lakh farmers in the Parbhani district within a week. This move follows Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhans recent interaction with farmers in Nanded, during which the issue of soybean crop claims was highlighted.

Pending Claims to be Settled After TAC Meeting

A meeting held by the National Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has led to this decision. The committee rejected the insurance company's objections regarding crop-cutting experiments and issued formal orders for the pending claims to be cleared within seven days. This will bring much-needed financial relief to farmers who have been waiting for their insurance settlements for months.

Gujarat Farmers Also Receive Relief After Heavy Rains

In a separate development, the Gujarat government has announced a relief package worth Rs 350 crore to assist farmers affected by heavy rains. Crops across nine districts in the state, including Junagadh, Surat, and Rajkot, were damaged in July, affecting around 4.06 lakh hectares of land. The compensation will help farmers in these areas recover from their losses, with payments varying based on crop type and the extent of damage.
