Sonalika Tractors, India’s largest tractor exporter, is making its move into the electric microcar market in Europe. The company has chosen the Netherlands as its starting point, tapping into the growing demand for clean micro-mobility solutions.
According to a senior corporate official, Sonalika has already collaborated with a worldwide engineering firm to develop a product for Western markets.
New Product for European Markets
Although Sonalika has not announced an official launch date, the electric microcar is expected to be available within the next 12 to 24 months.
Raman Mittal, Joint Managing Director of Sonalika Group, said, “The product was created in India with global partners. We are very close to the endgame. The prototype is ready, and we are going through the feedback phase.”
Growing Demand for Electric Microcars
Sonalika, headquartered in Punjab, is a prominent tractor manufacturer in India, accounting for around 13.5% of the domestic market. The firm is India's largest tractor exporter, accounting for around 34.3% of the export market.
Sonalika Group believes that now is the appropriate time to enter the electric microcar category, which is gaining popularity in Europe.
These smaller, lightweight vehicles are ideal for navigating busy streets and parking in tight spaces.
Mittal pointed out that the demand for microcars in Europe is different from India, where pricing for small cars is more of a challenge. In Europe, these vehicles are classified as L7E (heavy microcars) and L6E (light microcars).
New Manufacturing Plant for Electric Vehicles
Sonalika’s electric microcar will be produced at an all-new electric-only facility, the company’s third factory. This plant will also manufacture electric tractors. Sonalika’s current facilities include one in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, and a second factory under construction for exports.
The company plans to invest Rs 1,000 crore in its electrification project, which includes the new microcar, electric tractors, and the new plant.
