PM Awas Yojana Gramin now includes more farmers, offering housing subsidies. The new survey starts on October 8.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G), a key initiative by the Indian government, is aimed at providing homes for the homeless and those in need, especially in rural areas. This scheme helps people build or buy homes by offering financial assistance in the form of subsidies. While the urban version of the scheme is called PM Awas Yojana Urban, the rural version is known as PM Awas Yojana Gramin. Recently, there have been important updates to the scheme that now extend benefits to more people, especially farmers.

The rules have been expanded to include farmers with irrigated land of up to 2.5 acres and unirrigated land of up to 5 acres. Earlier, these farmers were not eligible for the benefits. With this new relaxation, a larger number of farmers in rural areas can now fulfill their dream of owning a home under this scheme.

A new survey under the PM Awas Yojana Gramin is set to begin on October 8. This survey will focus on identifying villagers who are living in kutcha (temporary) houses. These people will be eligible for grants to build pucca (permanent) houses.
According to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, the last survey was conducted in 2018, but many deserving people were left out. Starting October 8, a new survey will be conducted to include those living in kutcha houses. The rules of the survey have also changed, allowing those with motorcycles or scooters to be eligible. Additionally, households with a monthly income of up to ₹15,000 can now also benefit from the scheme.

In Madhya Pradesh, the government has a target to build over 38 lakh houses under the PM Awas Yojana Gramin. So far, 37 lakh houses have been constructed, and 3 lakh houses have been allotted. The central government is also working on providing housing for the poor in urban areas under the PM Awas Yojana Urban.
Launched in 2016, the PM Awas Yojana aims to provide pucca houses with basic amenities to needy families, especially in rural areas, by 2024. The next phase, PM Awas Yojana 2.0, is set to continue until 2028-29. A new survey will also be conducted, aiming to build a total of 3 crore houses in the next 5 years—1 crore in urban areas and 2 crore in rural areas.
