The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a government initiative aimed at providing affordable housing to the poor and needy. This scheme operates in urban and rural areas under two different names: Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban (PMAY-U) for cities and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) for rural areas. Under PMAY-U, beneficiaries receive loans and subsidies to buy houses. In rural areas, PMAY-G offers financial assistance of up to ₹1.30 lakh for house construction, along with funds for house repairs.

New Instructions for PMAY-G

Recently, the government issued instructions to ensure that eligible individuals are not left out of the PMAY-G benefits. To prevent any delays, applications must now be verified within three days. This initiative aims to ensure that every eligible homeless person can receive a house under this scheme.

Registers to Be Maintained at Gram Panchayat Level

According to reports, the Awas Plus Survey 2024 has been introduced under PMAY-G. As per the new guidelines, secretaries and Block Development Officers (BDOs) are tasked with ensuring that ineligible people do not receive housing, while eligible individuals are not overlooked. Two registers will be maintained at the Gram Panchayat level under the name of "PMAY-G Beneficiary Selection 2024." These registers will document daily activities and will be reviewed by the BDO. Meetings will be held with village heads, area panchayat members, and gram panchayat secretaries to provide guidance on housing surveys and standards.

Key Instructions for Application Verification

The Uttar Pradesh government has outlined the following instructions for PMAY-G application verification:

• All applications must be verified within three days.
• Photo identity cards of eligible individuals will be available at district headquarters.
• The names of eligible and ineligible persons will be publicly displayed in villages through wall writing.
• If any eligible person is left out or an ineligible person receives the benefit, the verifying officer will be held accountable.
• BDOs must submit reports within three days of third-party verification if discrepancies are found.

Awas Plus 2024 Survey to Begin Soon

Preparations for the Awas Plus 2024 survey under PMAY-G will begin shortly. Officials and employees will undergo training before the survey to ensure no eligible person is excluded from the benefits. Public awareness campaigns will be conducted before the survey, with eligibility and ineligibility criteria prominently displayed at Gram Panchayat buildings and other public places.

Eligibility Criteria for PMAY-G

Eligible beneficiaries for PMAY-G include homeless families, destitute individuals, manual scavengers, tribal groups, and legally freed labourers. These groups are considered for housing benefits under the scheme.

Ineligibility Criteria for PMAY-G

Families will be ineligible for PMAY-G if they meet any of the following conditions:

• Ownership of 2.5 acres or more of irrigated land.
• A monthly income of ₹15,000 or more.
• Any family member paying income tax.
• A family member is employed in a government job.
• Ownership of a three-wheeler, four-wheeler, or large agricultural equipment like tractors or implements.
• Credit card holders with a loan limit of ₹50,000 or more.
• Families with registered non-agricultural or agriculture enterprises.

The government’s latest measures aim to streamline the application process and ensure that all eligible families are able to benefit from this vital housing initiative.
