The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) continues to provide affordable housing to the poor across India. Recently, the government approved the construction of 1,13,400 new homes under this scheme. In addition, keys to new homes were handed over to 46,000 beneficiaries, while approval letters were distributed to 32,000 people. The first installment of Rs 32 crore has also been released to help beneficiaries start building their homes.

Recent Developments in PMAY-G

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently released Rs 32 crore in the first installment to PMAY-G beneficiaries from Ranchi, Jharkhand. This event also saw the approval of 1,13,400 new houses to be built across Jharkhand for the poor and needy. The Prime Minister was originally scheduled to visit Jamshedpur for the event, but due to bad weather, the program was held in Ranchi.

Central Government’s Ambitious Target: 2 Crore New Homes

The central government has set a goal to build 2 crore additional homes under PMAY over the next five years. This project will require more than Rs 3.06 lakh crore. Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has stated that by the financial year 2024-25, approval letters will be distributed to all targeted beneficiaries. So far, out of the target of 2.95 crore houses, 2.65 crore have already been built.

How to Apply for PMAY-G Financial Assistance

To qualify for financial aid under PMAY-G, applicants must own at least 25 square meters of land. After a land survey, the government grants approval for house construction. Once approved, beneficiaries receive financial assistance in three stages:

  1. First installment: Rs 40,000
  2. Second installment: Rs 70,000
  3. Final installment: Rs 20,000

This brings the total subsidy amount to Rs 1.30 lakh.
