Odisha declares unseasonal rains as a natural disaster. Over 6.66 lakh farmers to receive ₹291 crore compensation for crop losses. Learn more.
The Odisha government has announced compensation of ₹291 crore for farmers who suffered crop damage due to unseasonal rains in December 2024. The decision was shared by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during the Krishi Odisha Conclave 2025. This marks a significant step in recognizing unseasonal rainfall as a natural disaster, enabling farmers to receive compensation from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
Farmers who reported crop losses of over 33% between December 20 and December 28, 2024, are eligible for this compensation. A total of 6,66,720 farmers have been identified as beneficiaries. The state government will provide ₹291.50 crore in financial aid to these farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Chief Minister Majhi, along with Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, visited Gajapati and Ganjam districts to assess the crop damage. During the visit, the Chief Minister met with affected farmers and assured them of prompt assistance. Officials were instructed to complete damage surveys quickly and disburse the compensation without delay.
Unseasonal rains have damaged crops on 2,26,791 hectares of farmland in Odisha. Apart from paddy farmers, the state government will provide financial assistance to farmers growing vegetables, betel nut, cotton, and other cash crops. The government also plans to boost farmers self-reliance by offering subsidies for seeds, fertilizers, water, and machinery.
The Odisha government’s Mukhyamantri Kisan Yojana has already provided ₹925 crore to 16 lakh farmers. Additional measures include improved irrigation facilities, cold storage, warehouses, agricultural machinery, and model markets. Farmers are also receiving special incentives to purchase machinery, ensuring better productivity and resilience.
Chief Minister Majhi highlighted the government’s dedication to farmer welfare, stating, “We are committed to supporting our farmers in every possible way. From compensation for losses to long-term initiatives, we aim to make our farmers self-reliant.”
This announcement comes as a relief to Odisha’s farming community, showcasing the government’s proactive approach to addressing their challenges.
