Key Highlights

  • ₹2.99 lakh subsidy for farmers to build wells under MGNREGA.
  • Boosts irrigation and reduces rainwater dependency.
  • Benefits small, marginal, and weaker section farmers.
  • Employment is generated through construction projects.
  • Application via Gram Panchayat or Rural Development Department.

The Indian government is offering financial aid of up to ₹2.99 lakh to farmers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for constructing wells. This scheme, called MNREGA Well Construction (Kuan Nirman Yojana), aims to improve irrigation facilities for farmers in rural areas and reduce dependence on rainwater.

Purpose of the Scheme

The scheme helps farmers build wells on private land, enabling year-round irrigation for crops. It also creates job opportunities for rural workers under MNREGA. The initiative benefits small, marginal, and economically weaker farmers, empowering them to grow multiple crops and increase their income.

How Farmers Benefit

A recent example is Ram Milan, a farmer from Chhattisgarh’s Ambikapur district. He applied for the scheme and received approval for ₹2.99 lakh. With the well now operational, he no longer relies on rain for irrigation. He grows wheat, paddy, maize, and vegetables, significantly improving his farm productivity and income.

Employment Generated

The construction of Ram Milan’s well provided 600 man-days of work for MNREGA laborers. This highlights the dual benefits of the scheme – aiding farmers and providing employment in rural areas.

Subsidy Details

Under the scheme:

  • ₹43,440 is granted for digging up to 6 meters.
  • ₹91,040 is provided for a 12-meter depth.
  • ₹62,000 is allocated for well construction up to field level.
  • ₹43,547 is offered for recharging structures, parapets, and signage.

Eligibility for the Scheme

Farmers from weaker sections, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and BPL families, can apply. Families headed by women, the disabled, or those who have benefited from land reforms are also eligible. Farmers who already own irrigation facilities are excluded.

Application Process

Farmers can apply through their local Gram Panchayat or the Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj. Preference is given to widows, deserted women, and Scheduled Caste/Tribe families.

Key Benefits of the Scheme

  • Ensures sustainable water availability for farming.
  • Promotes natural water recharge.
  • Improves the local environment.
  • Employs rural workers.
