In India, sugarcane is an essential cash crop for farmers, offering significant benefits but also posing potential risks. Proper care is crucial to achieve a better yield. The Agriculture Department provides monthly guidance on the necessary sugarcane cultivation tasks through a detailed calendar. As August approaches, farmers need to pay special attention to their crops. By performing the following eight tasks, they can ensure healthy and improved sugarcane production.

8 Essential Tasks for August

  1. Prevent Sugarcane from Falling: - In the first week of August, tie the sugarcane plants to prevent them from falling. Use the dry leaves of the plants to tie each bunch in the middle of every row.
  2. Manage Green Manure: - For fields where Dhaincha or Sunai was sown for green manure, level the field and turn it over with a soil-turning plough after 45 to 60 days. If super phosphate was not previously applied, add 40 to 60 kg per hectare after turning the crop for best results.
  3. Spray Urea Solution: - Dissolve 5% urea in water and spray it on the sugarcane crop to maximize benefits. Note that rain within a day of spraying can reduce the effectiveness of the urea.
  4. Ensure Proper Drainage: - During the rainy season, if the field is flooded, make arrangements for proper drainage to prevent crop damage.
  5. Remove Creeping Weeds: - Weeds in sugarcane fields, especially those that wrap around the plants, can hinder growth. Remove and dispose of these creeper-like weeds to promote healthy growth.
  6. Select and Prepare Seed Sugarcane: - In the eastern part of the state, sugarcane sowing begins in mid-September. Farmers should select different sugarcane varieties from nurseries and arrange for seed sugarcane for their fields.
  7. Monitor for Diseases: - Diseases like Kundwa, Kana, Vivarn, Laldhari, and Pokka, as well as pulp rot, can affect sugarcane in August. Regularly inspect the crop and take preventive measures if any signs of disease are detected.
  8. Inspect for Pests: - Pests such as the top borer, black spotter, white insect, pyrilla, sprout borer, and Gurudaspur borer can impact the sugarcane crop. Regularly inspect the crop and take necessary measures if any pest symptoms are observed.

By following these eight tasks in August, farmers can safeguard their sugarcane crops from potential damage and ensure a healthy and abundant yield.
