Government Ensures Steady DAP Supply for Rabi 2024 Amid Media Concerns

Key Highlights

  • Government dismisses media claims of DAP shortage for Rabi 2024.
  • MRP of DAP remains stable at Rs. 1350 per 50 kg bag.
  • Subsidies for DAP have increased to support farmers.
  • A special package of Rs. 3500 per metric tonne was introduced.
  • Budget allocation for Rabi 2024-25 raised to Rs. 24,475 crores.

The government has responded to recent reports suggesting a potential shortage of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) for the upcoming Rabi crop, assuring that these claims are misleading. Officials clarified that there is no shortage of DAP, and they are taking steps to maintain its availability to support farmers during this crucial season.

Stable Prices and Increased Support for Farmers

To keep costs manageable, the government has kept the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of DAP steady at Rs. 1350 per 50 kg bag since the Covid-19 pandemic began. This stable pricing allows farmers to plan without concern for sudden cost hikes. Contrary to some claims, subsidies for DAP have actually increased to counter global price fluctuations and ensure that farmers aren’t impacted by international market changes.

Two Key Steps for Long-Term Stability

The government recently announced two key initiatives to support sustainable DAP access:

  1. Special Subsidy Package: The government introduced a package of Rs. 3500 per metric tonne (MT) for DAP, totaling Rs. 2625 crores. This helps companies keep DAP affordable for farmers, even with international price rises.
  2. Subsidy Adjustment Linked to Global Prices: The DAP subsidy is now linked to global price shifts, ensuring that if procurement prices increase internationally, fertilizer companies can still meet farmer’s demands at a stable cost.

Increased Budget for Rabi 2024-25

The government has increased its allocation for the Rabi season to Rs. 24,475 crores. This budget is aimed at securing enough fertilizer supply to boost the productivity of agriculture, showing a firm commitment to supporting the farming sector.

DAP’s Role and Government Measures

DAP is essential for crop growth as it provides 46% phosphorus, which supports early-stage crop development, especially in root formation. Phosphorus helps plants transfer energy efficiently, leading to healthier roots and higher crop yields. Because of its importance, a steady supply of DAP during the Rabi season is vital for farmers.

Although geopolitical factors have recently affected shipping routes, the Department of Fertilizers has taken action to maintain DAP availability from September through November 2024. This ensures farmers have the resources needed for a productive season, despite international challenges.

The government’s proactive steps show its commitment to stable fertilizer access for farmers, helping them focus on growing crops without concern over DAP shortages.

CMV360 Says

The government’s proactive measures ensure a stable DAP supply and support for farmers during the Rabi 2024 season. With increased subsidies, budget allocation, and strategic initiatives, farmers can focus on their crops confidently, unaffected by global market fluctuations and media-driven concerns about DAP availability.
