UP's subsidy program for maize and sugarcane uplifts farmers, ensuring increased production and improved income, fostering agricultural sustainability.
Farmers cultivating maize and sugarcane in Uttar Pradesh have reasons to cheer as the state government has introduced a subsidy program. This initiative aims to encourage more farmers to grow these crops, ultimately increasing production and improving their income.
The UP government wants more farmers to grow maize, and they're launching a scheme to make it happen. The plan is to expand sugarcane cultivation by two lakh hectares and increase maize production by over 11 lakh metric tonnes. Every farmer, no matter the district, can benefit from this scheme, receiving grants for up to two hectares of cultivation.
Under the new scheme, farmers growing different types of maize will get financial help. For indigenous maize, hybrid maize, and popcorn maize, there's a subsidy of Rs 2400 per hectare. If you're growing baby corn or regular maize, you'll get Rs 16,000 per hectare. And if you're into sweet maize, the government is offering a substantial grant of Rs 20,000 per hectare. This support will continue for four years, giving steady help to maize farmers.
All farmers in the state can benefit from this scheme, but there's extra focus on 13 districts, including Bahraich, Bulandshahr, Kannauj, Unnao, Hardoi, Gonda, Kasganj, Etah, Farrukhabad, Ballia, and Lalipur, selected for maize cultivation under the National Food Security Mission.
Maize is more than just a crop; it's versatile. Besides being a food staple, it's used as animal and poultry feed, in processed foods, and even to make ethanol. With its increasing demand, growing maize is becoming a profitable venture for farmers.
In the last financial season, UP produced 14.56 lakh metric tonnes of maize across 6.97 lakh hectares during the Kharif season. Whereas in rabi season,0.28 metric tons of maize was achieved in0.10 lakh hectares and in zaid season, 1.42 lakh metric ton of maize was achieved in 0.49 lakh hectares. The state now aims to increase production by over 11 lakh metric tonnes.
Farmers growing sugarcane are also in for some help. The subsidy program offers Rs 900 per hectare for sugarcane seeds, land treatment, and paddy management. In simple terms, these government efforts are a big step towards helping farmers, making farming more profitable, and securing a brighter future for agriculture in Uttar Pradesh.
