Wheat Procurement Estimates for Madhya Pradesh This year, Madhya Pradesh is expected to procure 80 lakh metric tons of wheat. The state produces around 350 lakh metric tons of wheat annually, making it the second-largest wheat producer in India after Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh contributes about 32% of the country’s total wheat production, while Madhya Pradesh accounts for 19%.
In previous years, wheat production in Madhya Pradesh has fluctuated:
2019–20: 371.98 lakh metric tons
2020–21: 356.69 lakh metric tons
2021–23: 349.23 lakh metric tons
2023–24: 328.96 lakh metric tons (lowest in five years)
Madhya Pradesh is known for its premium-quality Sharbati wheat, mainly grown in Sehore, Hoshangabad, Narsinghpur, Harda, Ashok Nagar, Bhopal, and the Malwa region.
So far, over 2.91 lakh farmers in Madhya Pradesh have registered to sell wheat at MSP. The government’s announcement of Rs 2,600 per quintal has encouraged farmers to participate in the procurement process. However, wheat prices are currently above Rs 2,600 per quintal in many mandis across states.
This decision by the government aims to boost farmer's income and ensure fair prices for their crops.
