Great news has arrived for paddy farmers! The state government has announced a significant bonus of Rs 500 per quintal on the purchase of paddy for the next Kharif marketing season. This means that farmers will receive extra money when they sell their paddy, providing them with more financial support and encouragement.

However, there is an important condition attached to this bonus. The state government has specified that the bonus will only be given for long varieties of paddy. The Chief Minister has urged farmers to focus on cultivating these long varieties. If farmers choose to grow these types, they will receive a Rs 500 bonus in addition to the Minimum Support Price (MSP). This initiative aims to promote the cultivation of higher-quality paddy.
In the state, there are two main types of paddy cultivation: long paddy and coarse paddy. Currently, most farmers grow coarse paddy, which is less profitable because it sells for a lower price than long paddy. Long paddy, which is of higher quality, fetches a higher price and is generally above the MSP. The government’s decision to give a bonus only for long paddy has sparked controversy.
The opposition, particularly the Bharat Rashtra Samiti, has criticized this move. They argue that the bonus should be applied to all types of paddy, not just the long variety. The opposition leaders have called the decision unfair, stating that most farmers grow coarse paddy and will not benefit from this bonus. In Telangana, approximately 90% of the paddy cultivated is coarse, while only 10% is the better quality long paddy. The Bharat Rashtra Samiti has demanded the Congress government to immediately withdraw the decision and extend the Rs 500 bonus to all varieties of paddy.
In addition to the bonus announcement, Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has reassured farmers that the government will soon fulfill its promise of waiving crop loans up to Rs 2 lakh. This waiver is expected to take place on or before August 15. The Chief Minister, A Revanth Reddy, has already committed to this promise, ensuring that the government is taking all necessary steps to implement the loan waiver and provide relief to the farmers.
Minister Uttam Reddy also mentioned that new ration cards will be issued after the parliamentary elections. This decision has been approved by the state cabinet, but its implementation was delayed due to the election code of conduct. The government aims to establish a strong financial system to fulfill all its commitments to the people, including the issuance of new ration cards.
The state’s efforts to support farmers extend to the ongoing purchase of paddy grown during the Rabi season. So far, more than 36 lakh metric tonnes of paddy have been purchased from farmers at the MSP. According to Shri Nivas Reddy, the payments for these purchases are being deposited in farmers' bank accounts within three days. This swift payment process is part of the government’s commitment to ensure that farmers receive their due earnings promptly and efficiently.
Telangana, located in South India, has a vast area dedicated to paddy cultivation, covering about 44 lakh acres. However, recent climate changes and a lack of rain have affected paddy crops, leading to a decrease in the area under rice cultivation. The state government’s initiatives, including the bonus and other support measures, aim to mitigate these challenges and boost paddy production in the region.

These recent announcements and initiatives by the state government are designed to support and encourage the farming community in Telangana. The Rs 500 bonus on long paddy, the loan waiver, the issuance of new ration cards, and the efficient purchase of paddy at MSP are all steps towards ensuring the well-being and prosperity of the farmers. The government remains committed to addressing the concerns of the farmers and providing them with the necessary support to thrive.
