Key Highlights

  • Centralized digital farmer data.
  • A budget of Rs 2,817 crore was approved.
  • Enhances access to government schemes.
  • Reduces paperwork and false insurance claims.
  • Integrates modern technologies like AI and Big Data.

The central government has introduced a new initiative, the Rs 2800 crore Digital Agriculture Mission, to greatly benefit farmers. This mission is expected to impact areas such as grain procurement at MSP, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, and crop production estimates in the coming years. The mission is designed to streamline processes, reduce false claims for crop insurance, and boost overall efficiency in agriculture for the next two years. Let's dive into what this mission entails and how farmers will benefit from it.

What is the Digital Agriculture Mission?

The Digital Agriculture Mission aims to centralize farmer data by digitizing various agricultural records. Currently, farming and farmer-related data are scattered across different departments. For instance, land records and fertilizer applications are with state governments, while other important data are held by the Ministry of Cooperation, Ministry of Animal Husbandry, and Ministry of Rural Development. By bringing all this information into one platform, the mission will simplify the process of identifying eligible farmers and ensuring that they benefit from government schemes.

How Much Will Be Spent on the Digital Agriculture Mission?

The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare is funding the mission. The Union Cabinet has approved a budget of Rs 2,817 crore for this project. Out of this amount, Rs 1,940 crore will be spent by the central government by March 31, 2026, while state governments will provide the remaining funds.

Objectives of the Digital Agriculture Mission

The main goal of the Digital Agriculture Mission is to improve the lives of farmers by using technology to increase their income. The mission is based on the Digital Public Infrastructure framework, which aims to make agriculture more data-driven and efficient.

Major Pillars of the Digital Agriculture Mission

The mission is built on two key pillars:

  1. Agri Stack: This includes farmer registration, land mapping, crop sowing details, and geospatial data. It also covers drought and flood monitoring, weather and satellite data, and crop production modeling.
  2. Agricultural Decision Support System: This pillar helps farmers make informed decisions by providing essential data like soil profiles, groundwater availability, and weather patterns.

Key Provisions of the Digital Agriculture Mission

Under this mission, several provisions are in place to ensure a more efficient agricultural process. These include:

  • Soil Profile and Digital Crop Assessment: Farmers will have access to detailed soil information and crop assessment data.
  • AI and Big Data: These modern technologies will be used to provide better insights for farming.
  • Seamless Connectivity: Farmers will be connected to buyers and suppliers, making it easier to access loans and other services.
  • Mobile Connectivity: Farmers will receive new information directly on their mobile phones.

How Will Farmers Benefit?

Farmers are expected to see significant advantages from the Digital Agriculture Mission. Here are some of the key benefits:

  • Digital Identification: Within two to three years, farmers will be able to digitally identify themselves to access various benefits and services.
  • Less Paperwork: Farmers will no longer need to deal with cumbersome paperwork as all their family and farming-related data will be stored digitally.
  • Access to Government Schemes: Eligible farmers will find it easier to benefit from government schemes, especially when dealing with crop damage assessments and crop insurance claims.
  • Easier Access to Loans and Services: With digital data in place, farmers will have quicker access to crop loans, crop insurance, and government procurement at MSP without the need for excessive documentation.

The Digital Agriculture Mission is a step towards transforming Indian agriculture through technology, ensuring farmers can grow and thrive with better access to data and government support.
