Compensation for Crop Loss: Relief for 16 Lakh Farmers

Karnataka government aids farmers with crop loss compensation, ensuring timely relief amid weather challenges and verification hurdles.

Key Highlights

This year, many farmers faced crop damage due to drought, excessive rain, and hailstorms across different regions. To support these farmers whose livelihoods were affected, the government has announced crop loss compensation. This compensation aims to reduce the financial burden faced by farmers due to crop loss. Approximately 16 lakh farmer families will receive Rs 3,000 each, directly deposited into their bank accounts.

State Revenue Minister's Announcement

Krishna Byre Gowda, the State Revenue Ministerhas made a significant announcement to aid small and marginal farmers. He emphasized that around 16 lakh farmer families in the state will benefit from this compensation scheme. The government has allocated funds to mitigate the loss of livelihood caused by drought. Each affected farmer will receive Rs 3,000 as financial assistance directly into their accounts.

Allocation of Funds and Implementation

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the government plans to disburse the compensation using funds from both the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF), along with state government funds. Approximately Rs 460 crore will be utilized for this purpose. Officials have been instructed to accelerate the process of disbursing compensation to eligible farmers.

Progress and Pending Relief

Out of 240 talukas, 223 have been declared drought-affected by the state government, with 196 severely affected. An estimated Rs 4,300 crore will be transferred to the accounts of these talukas as drought relief compensation, which may take up to 20 days to complete. Previously, over Rs 3,000 crore has been disbursed to more than 32 lakh farmers.

Pending Verification and Further Steps

Despite the progress, about 1.5 lakh farmers are yet to receive the second installment of compensation relief due to minor technical issues delaying verification. However, the state government is committed to resolving these issues immediately. Once the verification is completed, relief amounting to over Rs 3,000 crore will be disbursed to more than 33 lakh farmers.

Future Plans and Timelines

The Karnataka state government has decided to distribute compensation for both rain-fed and irrigated crops. Additionally, eligible farmers who were previously excluded from the relief list will also receive compensation. Approximately 3 lakh eligible farmers are set to receive a total relief amount of Rs 400-500 croreDistribution of compensation will commence within 10 days after verification by district authorities.
