Farmers cultivating sugarcane have received encouraging news from the Bihar government. In a significant move aimed at boosting their income, the state government has announced an increase in the price of sugarcane by ₹20 per quintal. This decision was made under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during the Pragati Yatra in West Champaran.

Earlier in 2024, the Bihar government had increased sugarcane prices by ₹10 per quintal. Now, with the additional ₹10 increase, the total price hike reaches ₹20 within a single season. The Chief Minister emphasized that this decision was made after listening to the concerns of sugarcane farmers, many of whom had expressed dissatisfaction with the earlier rates.

Despite the recent increase in prices, farmers in Uttar Pradesh are still receiving the lowest rates among major sugarcane-producing states. Meanwhile, Punjab tops the list with ₹391 per quintal, followed by Haryana at ₹386 per quintal.
The Central Government has set the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane at ₹340 per quintal for the financial year 2024–25. This FRP is the minimum rate that sugar mills must pay farmers across the country. However, state governments have the authority to set higher prices to further benefit farmers, as seen in Bihar, Punjab, and Haryana.
