Agrovision 2024 Showcases CNG and Biofuel Tractors, Promoting Sustainable Farming

The 15th edition of Agrovision 2024 is being held in Nagpur from November 22 to 25. It highlights the latest in farming technologies, including tractors and farm equipment powered by CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and biofuel. These innovations aim to promote eco-friendly farming while reducing farmer’s costs.

Companies like Mahindra and TAFE have developed these sustainable machines but face delays in commercial rollout. The key issue is the lack of CNG and biofuel filling stations in rural areas. Approval under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR) is also awaited for these vehicles.

Government Support for Cleaner Fuel in Farming

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has stressed the importance of alternative fuel tractors. He noted that these tractors can significantly reduce pollution and help farmers save money. Gadkari announced plans for 400 CNG filling stations to be set up by Indian Oil Corporation, which will help lower fuel costs for farmers.

He also highlighted that using biofuel could save farmers at least ₹1 lakh annually. Gadkari’s company, CIAN Agro, is working on establishing a CNG production plant to support this transition.

Infrastructure Challenges Delay Commercial Launch

Despite progress, the commercial introduction of CNG and biofuel tractors faces hurdles due to inadequate infrastructure. Most CNG and biofuel filling stations are in urban areas, making it challenging to serve rural farmers.

TAFE’s Group President, TR Kesavan, expressed optimism that rural infrastructure for alternative fuels would improve soon. He emphasized that the development of CNG and biofuel stations is critical for launching these tractors in rural regions.

Transforming Agriculture with Alternative Fuels

The introduction of CNG and biofuel tractors is part of a broader effort to reduce emissions and modernize agriculture. Gadkari noted that farmers could also benefit economically by becoming suppliers of biofuel feedstock.

Once the necessary infrastructure is in place, these tractors are expected to revolutionize farming. They promise not only to lower operational costs but also to make agriculture more environmentally friendly.
