Three new sugarcane varieties have been released by the Sugarcane and Sugar Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh. These varieties—Co. Se. 17451, Co. Sha. 19231, and Co. Lakh. 16470—were approved at a recent meeting of the “Seed Sugarcane and Sugarcane Variety Approval Sub-Committee.” The new varieties aim to increase sugarcane production and boost farmer’s income. 1. Sugarcane Variety Co. Sha. 19231 (Lahiri)
- Developed at Shahjahanpur Institute by polycrossing Co.S. 95422.
- Average yield: 92.05 tonnes per hectare.
- Sugar content (January): 17.85% in juice, 13.20% in sugarcane.
- Estimated sugar production: 12.23 tonnes per hectare.
- Named “Lahiri” after martyr Rajendra Nath Lahiri on the centenary of the Kakori incident.
- Suitable for early cultivation across Uttar Pradesh.
2. Sugarcane Variety Co. Se. 17451 (Krishna)
- Developed at Sevarhi Institute from B.U. 120 GC.
- Average yield: 87.96 tonnes per hectare.
- Sugar content (January): 16.63% in juice, 12.82% in sugarcane.
- Estimated sugar production: 10.81 tonnes per hectare.
- Named “Krishna” after Dr. Krishnanand, the late scientist who developed this variety.
- Recommended for eastern Uttar Pradesh.

3. Sugarcane Variety Co. Lakh. 16470
- Developed by the Indian Sugarcane Research Institute, Lucknow.
- Average yield: 82.50 tonnes per hectare.
- Sugar content (12 months): 17.37% in juice, 13.20% in sugarcane.
- Suitable for mid-late sowing in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Comparison with Popular Sugarcane Variety 0238
- Varieties Co. Se. 17451 and Co. Lakh. 16470 are considered superior to the popular 0238 variety.
- Co. 0238’s average yield is 82.97 tonnes per hectare, with sugar content ranging from 16.01% to 19.19% in juice depending on the harvest month.
- Both new varieties are medium-thick and solid, with better resistance to red rot disease.
Changes to Approved Varieties List
The Sugarcane Research Council has approved Co. Sha. 19231 for eastern Uttar Pradesh and removed older varieties Co. 12029, Co. Sha. 99259, and Co. Sha. 96268 due to low popularity and negligible cultivation area.
