Key Highlights

  • Disease: Pokka disease in sugarcane, caused by Fusarium fungus.
  • Symptoms: White spots, leaf withering, blackening, stunted growth.
  • Affected Area: Upper leaves show twisting and whip-like shapes.
  • Treatment: Use Carbendazim and Copper Oxychloride fungicides.
  • Timing: Spray at first signs, repeat after 10-15 days.
  • Impact: Prevents severe crop damage, and ensures better yields.

Pokka disease in sugarcane is caused by a fungus called Fusarium. This disease spreads due to alternating periods of rain and sunlight, which create ideal conditions for the fungus to thrive. It commonly appears in the months of July and August and has been increasingly affecting sugarcane crops in recent years.

Symptoms of Pokka Disease

When sugarcane is affected by Pokka disease, white spots start appearing on the leaf sheath, where the leaf and stem join. The leaves begin to wither and turn black, and the upper part of the leaf rots and falls. This stunts the growth of the sugarcane, resulting in shorter plants. The disease is particularly severe in sugarcane varieties with broad leaves. Affected leaves may also show knife-like cuts on the edges, and the plant's overall growth is hindered, making the cane appear crooked and dwarf.

Identifying Pokka Disease on Sugarcane

Agriculture or Agricultural scientists from the Uttar Pradesh Research Council highlight that the disease's symptoms are most visible on the upper leaves of the sugarcane. Initially, white spots appear on the top leaves, causing them to twist and cling together, forming a whip-like shape. Over time, these leaves fail to develop properly, rot, and fall off. Severe infections lead to all the top leaves drying out and falling, making the upper part of the cane look stunted and preventing it from growing to its full length.

Preventive Measures for Pokka Disease

To control Pokka disease, farmers should take immediate action as soon as symptoms appear.

Here are the recommended steps:

  1. Spray Carbendazim: Mix 400 grams of Carbendazim 50 WP in 400 liters of water and spray per acre. This should be done at the first sign of disease.
  2. Use Copper Oxychloride: Mix 800 grams of Copper Oxychloride 50 WP in 400 liters of water and spray per acre.
  3. Combination Treatment: Mix 400 grams of Kasukimycin 5WP and Copper Oxychloride 45 WP in 400 liters of water and spray per acre. Repeat this spray after 10 to 15 days if necessary.

By following these preventive measures, farmers can protect their sugarcane crops from significant damage and ensure a healthy yield.

Pokka disease poses a significant threat to sugarcane crops, especially during the rainy season. Prompt identification and treatment are crucial. Farmers should use fungicides like Carbendazim and Copper Oxychloride at the first signs of the disease to prevent severe damage. Implementing these measures can help maintain crop health and ensure better yields, safeguarding the livelihood of farmers dependent on sugarcane cultivation.
